From 26 Jan to 1 May: I drove to N Calif and back from Maine using the southern routes. I put over 11,000 mi on my 2005 Volvo XC90 which uses premium. I averaged 20mpg. During this timeframe gas went up and up. I stayed in Choice motels but did save a little money with their free breakfasts,power bars and staying about 30 days with friends.
Does your 05 have the V8?
We have an 03 with the T6 AWD and also get good mileage..for an SUV.
