A day in the life of President Bush (5/7/06): photos & news

PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: While the Vice President and Mrs. Lynne Cheney were headed back to the United States from their visit to former communist states in Eastern Europe and Western Asia, President Bush, the First Lady and GWB's parents attended St. John's Church this morning. The first family are spending a quiet day at the White House.
UPCOMING: Big news...President Bush will host a State Dinner for his good friend, Australian Prime Minister John Howard. From the News.com.au website:
Mr Bush, who notoriously dislikes the formality of black-tie events, has previously hosted just seven similar events at the White House during his five-and-a-half year tenure. Even the Chinese President, Hu Jintao, was unsuccessful when he sought a similar invitation during his visit to Washington three weeks ago.
The lavish event, a feature of the Prime Minister's five-day visit to the US capital, underscores the close bonds that have been forged between the two leaders since the September 11, 2001, attacks on the US.
Apart from the clinking of wine glasses, the thorny issue of Iran's nuclear build-up will feature prominently during Mr Howard's visit to the US capital, which begins this weekend.
This article from News.com.au is the only piece I found on the State Dinner. News.com.au had it in "Breaking News" with a 5/8/06 dateline, so perhaps the White House has just made the announcement today for initial publication in Australian media.
Note that the article does not say what day the dinner will be held, but refers to the Prime Minister's trip beginning "this weekend." So perhaps the state dinner will be held not this coming week, but the following one?

This morning I found a delightful ping to me on the 4/29/06 Dose from 'TripleRPets,' who seems to have signed on today just to post the following. I have asked for permission to post (here) one of the photos of the President on their website, but don't know if Kim will ever check back to see her FReemail from me. So I encourage you all to go to their website to see the photos of GWB and the puppies, and to read more about this excellent organization.
Hi, this is Kim with Triple R Pets. The pups that came back with the president were an adorable bully mix who looks like the RCA dog and a little shep mix pup with a crooked tail. The picture of President Bush looking surprised was snapped after I informed him two pups were accompanying him to Washington. You can read more at www.triplerpets.org. Thanks,
Kim

Hi "Hair," just pinging you FYI to the message from Triple R Pets I received this morning and posted in #1 above. Thought you'd enjoy seeing the message from their Placement Director and the photos of President Bush on their website. I've asked for permission to post one of the photos we haven't seen yet on the Dose, as well as other info from their site. Have not received it yet, so am directing people to their website.

President Bush (back to camera) directs his father, former President George H. W. Bush, to the presidential limo after attending a Sunday morning church service in Washington today.

There must have been a bit of confusion about who was going to ride in what limo. Here President Bush and a Secret Service Agent point to a motorcade vehicle.

Former President Bush as he walked into St. John's this morning. (We hope Yahoo got the date right on these photos, because GHWB almost seems to be wearing the same suit he wore to the wedding last night -- which isn't impossible if he only brought one suit for the weekend. The White House valets would have it pressed for him.)

From the White House website:
President Bush walks onto the field of Boone Pickens Stadium at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater where he delivered the commencement address to the class of 2006 on Saturday.

Walking with graduates after arriving at Oklahoma State University. Can you imagine the thrill it must have been for this group of graduates to have the honor of greeting the President on his arrival and escorting him to the ceremony?

Another great photo of GWB at the commencement ceremonies yesterday.

Big smile as he wears the medal for his honorary Doctor of Laws degree.

Thanks for The Dose!

This next series of photos are also from the White House website, and are of the Vice President and Mrs. Cheney's trip to Eastern Europe and Central Asia. They were taken by White House photographer David Bohrer, traveling with the VP.
Vice President Dick Cheney participates in a breakfast meeting with representatives of Kazakhstani opposition groups Saturday in Astana, Kazakhstan. During the meeting the political leaders shared their ideas regarding political and economic reform and the advancement of democracy in Kazakhstan.

Lynne Cheney directs a question during a discussion with young Kazakhstan leaders. The Vice President and Mrs. Cheney met with the youth to encourage people-to-people ties between the U.S. and Kazakhstan.

The VP talks with Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader before a dinner meeting Saturday in the Old City of Dubrovnik. He met with the Prime Minister to express U.S. support of Croatia's ambitions to become a member of the transatlantic community through integration into NATO and the European Community.

The VP and Lynne are guided on a tour of the Old City of Dubrovnik.

Inside the atrium of the Rectors Palace, a gothic monument constructed in 1435 upon the foundations of structures dating back to the middle ages.

With Croatian President Stjepan Mesic.
