The Republican Party is uneasy as it shambles toward the crucial 2006 congressional elections. Many of its supporters claim to feel demoralized, if not seduced and abandoned, by the conservative president they thought they elected in 2004. With President Bush's Nixonian economic policies and unwillingness to curtail federal spending, and the Republican faithful as confused as everyone else about the Iraq War, this is a good time to gain some political perspective from two veteran architects of the Reagan Revolution.
In the midst of another difficult political predicament, Germany's Iron Chancellor, Otto von Bismarck, once said he had finally found two experts who clearly understood the problem. Unfortunately, they disagreed with one another on the solution. So do Bruce Bartlett and Kevin Phillips. But with the GOP political-direction-finder whirling like a compass needle in a magnetic storm, perhaps they can at least help illustrate its different aspects.

Don't count out the dems not removing bush from office.
There are a lot of gop senators like chafee, specter, hagel I can go on and on that will jump at impeachment for the shadiest of reasons.
The huge dem surge in 06 will be viewed by these rinos as an anti bush vote and will empower them to go after bush. Not saying it is definately going to happen but with conyers on a crusade to go after bush don't be surprised if we wind up with president pelosi.
I'm fairly sure you mean Shays (CT-04) not Hayes (NC-08). Hayes would've been in a competitive race, but his only viable opponent dropped out three weeks ago.
The whole point is that it is Domestic oil! It will take time to bring it online, but that does not mean we should not start NOW.
Honestly- as bad as I think the GOP is doing sometimes- and as mad as I get at some of 'em in Congress- I'll take the whole lot if it spares us Dems in positions of power again.

I saw that the war veteran withdrew.
But I saw a recent independent poll of hayes still losing by double digits to the new likely candidate he will face.
Hayes re-elect number was at 31 percent which was tom delay territory.
I think a lot of people will be surprised by the results in november. People keep saying vote them all out. But the only ones that will be voted out are the gop. The dems are fired up while our base can't stop bashing the gop.
A lot of good conservatives will be caught up in this mess.
Someone like J.D hayworth is polling terribly against the dem candidate. Hayworth won in 04 with 60 percent and now it looks like he could get 45 percent. This bashing of the gop all the time by conservatives will have pelosi democrats replacing good conservatives. It will make scum like rahm emanuel, schumer, dean, reid and pelosi big stars.
On shays he will lose by double digits along with hayes. Sweeney of NY will get crushed. A lot of northeastern gop reps will lose. Simmons of Conn will lose too even though he helped with the base staying there.
If I remember correctly, President Reagan's "insiders" warned the "non-confrontational" President Reagan to not rattle Gorby's cage in Berlin. "Mr Gorbachev. Tear down this wall."

Where are you getting your info? JD Hayworth is polling VERY well against his opponent, who is an ACLU person. The voters of AZ are NOT godless, and do NOT want an ACLU person, and JD has been GREAT on the border issue, which is VERY improtant to Arizonans.

Dems and the media has turned this country far left.
What really disappoints me is to see all the bush bashing on this site.
Gop has to put up with constant media lies, nagin and blanco in katrina, dem filibuster.
If this country had a fair media that exposed the rats for who they are this would be a different matter.
People say they don't believe the media. But the media sets the mood in the country. They make people depressed and only highlight bad news. They never go after dems, lie or take out of context what the gop does, praise dems, only focus on bad news out of iraq.
Perfect example in iraq there was a peaceful march of a million people to the shitte areas a few months back. Military had great planning. You never heard about that.
Media never focuses on all the new freedoms iraqis have.
They never focus on the good parts of the economy they beat the gas story to death. They go after bush like they are jihad after him.
They hounded bush for a month about sheehan.
They don't point out how dems are blocking any good legislation so they make bush look bad. The filibuster is what hurts gop the most. media tells everyone gop is in power but doesn't talk abotu how the dems can block anything with the filibuster. Then the dems block the legislation and then blame the gop for not doing anything.
And what?
So the American people are suddenly screaming for higher taxes, and crosses to be torn down from memorials because of the media?

I have read that internal gop polls have hayworth losing to the tempe dem mayor.
Hayworth is one of my favorite reps. But hayworth is getting caught up in all the gop bashing.
I'll be very surprised if he wins in this climate and that will be a shame because we need more hayworths not less of them.
Only thing good about midterms is that only one third of the senate goes before the polls. If the full senate went before the polls dems would get 60 plus filibuster proof senate.
Hopefully the climate in 08 will be better with hillary on the ballot to fire up the gop base. Maybe the 06 massacre will wake up the gop base. Only other thing good about this election is that hillary is not running in 06 which would be a very favorable climate for her. We got to hope that the gop nominee in 08 and hillary being on the ballot will change the context of the election.
Hayes was losing 43-35 and his re-elect was 31 percent I saw those numbers. I'll try to find the source.
JD will NOT lose; the GOP here have him ahead. State party people have talked to our group, and are not at all worried about JD.
