A HAMAS plot to assassinate Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president, has been thwarted after he was tipped off by Israeli intelligence.
Hamass military wing, the Izza Din Al-Qassem, had planned to kill Abbas at his office in Gaza, intelligence sources said.
Abbas, who became president of the Palestinian Authority last year after the death of Yasser Arafat, was formally warned of the danger by the Israelis and cancelled a planned visit to the territory.
The murder plan is the clearest sign yet of the tensions inside the Palestinian Authority between Hamas, which swept to power after elections in January, and Abbass Fatah movement.
Hamas leaders, who refuse to recognise the state of Israel, suspect Abbas of obstructing their attempts to govern, which have been hampered by a financial boycott from donor nations. Hamas considers Abbas to be a barrier to its complete control over Palestine and decided to kill him, said a Palestinian source who was an adviser to Arafat and is a close acquaintance of Abbas.
It is understood that the attack would also have targeted Mohammed Dahlan, Abbass strongman in Gaza.

Feeling Good about this?
Yes.
Either way , it's B.S. or a "Win, Win"

Looks like the cartridge box still has not been replaced with the ballot box in Islamoland. If you can't vote em out, shoot em out.
Hopefully the 'rank and file" Pali's will start to wake up, as the Iraqi's seem to be doing.
What kind of f***ing "political party" tries to KILL the leader of the opposition? Does nobody over there realize what absolutely barbaric a**hats Hamas is? And how is this not cause to lock up and execute anyone in Hamas leadership who had anything to do with it?
I understand Israel did this to marginalize Hamas. I certainly don't expect any warm and fuzzy feeings between the PA and Israel will develop or last due to this.
I wouldn't bet the farm on it..
I know. I DID say "hopefully". It really is a preferable alternative to exterminating the entire lot of them.
Oh I don't know about that...
L
The way they're going, their obliteration will be self administered over a decade or so..
What's interesting to me is .. if the tables were turned, would the PA have notified Israel ..??
NEVER!! But .. Israel is the bad guy! It's the same old, same old double standard.
We should outsource our intelligence to the Mossad. They seem to always know who and where their enemies are.
Of course Abbas would tell Israel. If the PM of Israel were killed it would mean all out war and he would fall very quickly at the hands of the extremists unless he left the country.
The last thing Abbas wants is open warfare with Israel. If that happens his power drops to zero and the miltants on the streets end up being the only ones with power.
Well .. that's an intereting take .. but I don't agree with you.
You think Abbas wants war?
Abbas's fault is that he is not only a weak man, but he is also in a weak position. He has used negotation as the answer to disarming Hamas. But, that was the only route he could take as he doesn't have the internal power to disarm Hamas anyway.
Arafat had the internal power that he could have violently disarmed Hamas. Abbas can't do jack.
It isn't that Abbas wants war .. it's that the hatred of Israel is stronger than their common sense.
This hatred has been fomenting for 4000 years, and I don't see any kind of logic displacing that hatred. If there was an opportunity to take out the Israeli PM - it would have happened .. and the consequences be damned.
Abbas is weak and powerless, and he certainly isn't pro-Isreal but the man is an intellectual and I have seen almost all his anti-Israel retoric as purely timed for political reasons. They reached a peak right before the elections and then they went away and then they came back again when he was getting in political trouble.
God only knows what he really feels about Israel.
I don't think you get it. The hatred of Israel is not a fallacy or an occasional lapse of sanity.
Hatred of Israel is the MAIN FOCUS. You actually have to go back to the days of Abraham and Sarah - they had 2 sons, Ishmael and Isaac. Ismael was the son of a slave woman (Arab), while Isaac was the son of a married couple - Abraham and Sarah. In Jewish law, the first born son inherits everything. Since Ishmael was the "first born" of Abraham - the Arab people have always claimed that the inheritance God gave to Abraham, rightfully belonged to Ishmael. However, because of the marriage covenant between Abraham and Sarah, God said the inheritance goes to Isaac. Ishmael was not considered the first born - in God's eyes.
Ishmael and his Mother were thrown out of the camp. This hatred of Israel for "stealing" the Arab inheritance is 4000 years old. Just take a look at the land where Israel is located - the surrounding country is all controled by Islamic fundamentalists. It's more of a land dispute between two half-brothers.
How many Arabic or Islamic people have you ever heard say .. Israel needs to be pushed into the ocean ..?? And .. if Israel really had the true inheritance God promised to Abraham, it would include all the land from the NILE TO THE EUPHRATES rivers. Geeeeee .. how much oil is there in those lands ..??
So whether Abbas is an intellectual or not .. he was indoctrinated as a child that Israel was to be hated for stealing their inheritance. While Abbas can put on a good face and appear to be "moderate" .. in his heart he hates Israel too. Therefore, I do not believe he would have done anything to prevent anybody from trying to kill Israel's PM.
