That cackling you're hearing comes from the chorus of Bush critics (an all-inclusive term that accounts for spittle-flecked bloggers and moderate liberal finger-waggers alike) giddy over Bush's basement-level poll numbers. Several bloggers have gone to the trouble of showing side-by-side charts of Bush's approval rating following close behind former President Richard Nixon's. At the end of the trail is the X-marks-the-spot treasure trove "Nixon resigns."

You are wrong. Reagan was at 37% in two Gallup polls from Jan14-17 & Jan21-24 1983. Reagan hit 35% in one Gallup poll on Jan28-31 1983. That was it. Bush43 has been below 40% for quite some time now, and not just because of the war in Iraq either. Conservatives give him low grades on his liberal spending habits, expanding government, and a liberal policy with open borders and illegal immigration.

As I pointed out to you, Reagan won in a landslide in 1980. Bush was lucky old Sandra Day O'Conner was sitting on the SCOTUS. Reagan was faced with the worst economic conditions since the Great Depression and his bold, decisive leadesrhip led to a 17 year economic boom. Bush43 has always had a solid economy on his side, low inteterst rates, low inflation and low unemployemnt rates.

Reagan has history on his side and deserves all the credit and kudos he receives. Bush is no Reagan. Get over it already.

If by extension you mean that the best we conservatives can hope for is radical moderation and aimless drift (which I believe is a fair why to characterize Bush's domestic agenda), I disagree.

Reagan signed the first handgun control bill in California history; Bush has signed no anti-gun laws in his political career.
Reagan signed the first Gay-rights legislation in California; Bush has never signed any gay rights legislation.
Reagan broke his promise never to raise taxes with his “revenue enhancement” programs along with the largest FICA increase in history. Bush hasn’t raised taxes in any way .
Reagan cut and run in Lebanon after the first taking of casualties. Bush has stayed the course and held to his promise not to back down.
Reagan appointed 3 liberals and one conservative to the Supreme Court. Bush hass appointed 2 Conservatives and numerous lower court Conservatives.
Reagan talked a good game on abortion but Bush pushed for and got the late term abortion ban passed.
Reagan left office and immediately endorsed the Brady Bill in his first public appearance as an ex-president.
The myth of Reagan is exactly that. A myth. He was a great president because he could say the right things at the right time to make the country feel better. It is beyond dispute that Reagan beats Bush hands down when it comes to communication BUT Bush beats Reagan in every conservative category anyone cares to offer.
I said "consider voting Libertarian." the immigration issue is one I completely disagree with them on. I just get disgusted when no major party really carries through with spending restraint.
President Reagan took office with our hostages still in Iran, he said he would act miltarily and the mullahs released the hostages immediately after he was sworn in.
The air traffic controllers struck, and President Reagan immediately fired them (they were getting paid $70,000 back then!)
And the poll numbers were from a deep recession because the home lending rate in 1980 was 16+%, and the construction industry was dead in the water.
It wasn't until 1984 that the construction industry started to show life, and it is still going over 20 years later.
He inherited the mess from Carter and cleaned it up quickly and decisively.

In the end, Bush will be remembered pretty much the same as Reagan with a lot of good points an, of course plenty of screw-ups.

Folks, folks. Please take a chill pill. This country isn't 60-40 conservative/liberal. It's 30/40/30 conservative/moderate/liberal. It's the 40% that decides elections. And a lot of those in the 40% want big government and all the things Bush PROMISED in his campaigns. And he has delivered on those promises. What was the BIG issue in 2000? Not terrorism. Not foreign policy. Not energy. It was prescription drugs and education. Bush promised to move on those items and he has followed through. He promised us conservative judges and he has delivered. He has promised us a forward defense of this country, and he has delivered. He promised us tax cuts, and he has delivered. He has tried to get an energy program through and well as social security reform, all thwarted by the Dems and the spineless Rhinos in Congress. Your anger should be directed at the gutless wonders in Congress who won't fight for this President. Remember too that it is Congress, not the President, that decides how big government is. Hell, the President can't even not spend the money that Congress tells him to spend. Reagan tried that in the '80s and the Supreme Court rebuked him and told him to follow his Constitutional obligation. Congress, not Bush, is our real enemy. Maybe if we ditched a few incumbents in the primaries the rest would get the message.
Either way, the way to look at the situation is that the glass is half full. No sense in smashing the glass because it's not full. Which will happen if the Dems take either house in Congress this November. You "scorched earth" folks just don't get it. You're only going to put Hillary in the White House and the Dems will busy themselves to undo what progress has been made over the last six years.

my PBS (channel 12 philadelphia, pa) shows movies every saturday after 8. and have been for years some are good movies and it's about the only tv i watch. tonight was ben-hur. last week was ben and jerry.. i mean ben and Woodward and Bernstien.
