Michele Bachmann, a fiery social conservative who calls herself a "woman on a mission," easily won endorsement Saturday to be the Republican candidate in the Minnesota's 6th Congressional District.
Meeting at Monticello High School, Republican convention delegates gave Bachmann their endorsement on the third ballot.
Bachmann, a state senator from Stillwater, got 61 percent of the vote, just over the number required for endorsement. But she was not strongly challenged by any of her three opponents.
Delegates then voted to make the endorsement unanimous.
State Rep. Jim Knoblach of St. Cloud, Minn., was second to Bachmann with 21 percent. State Rep. Phil Krinkie of Lino Lakes, the best-known fiscal conservative in the Legislature, finished third with 10 percent.
St. Cloud business executive Jay Esmay, a former Air Force pilot, finished fourth with seven percent.

Except she cant win
Why do you say that?
The 6th district is pretty conservative. It went for Bush in 2000 and 2004.
Or do you, a Marylander, know something that us Minnesotans don't?
APf
You still have the primary though.
against Patty "child advocate" Wetterling?
She's quite beatable.
This is what everyone had expected would happen.
Candidates who don't win the party convention endorsement have the option of running in the primary.
I like Bachman literally, figuratively, and, figuratively (she's as good looking and smart as she is conservative). I think she'll do a much better job stirring up the fires of hell than the nice guy Krinke. In any event, it just goes to show that conservatism is a winner - when given the chance.
I think that Michele Bachman has great potential. She could turn out to be a real leader, but she could also turn out to be another "Mean Jean" Schmidt or Helen Chenowith, making reelections closer than necessary with over-the-top statements.
Absent a Bachman nomination, Jim Knoblach would be a good choice, as we need more Certified Public Accountants in Congress.
That's rediculous. She can and will win.
I'm supporting Krinkie since the Club for Growth endorsed him and my friend in MN likes him.
The 6th District is conservative - but it's not a district that tolerates firebrands.
And Michele Bachmann (like her or not) is a firebrand. That's not a shot on her personally. It's who she is.
Several Minnesota bloggers in the know have questions regarding Bachmann's credibility and character. And these bloggers are not tools of the DFL either.
There is a sizable DFL vote in the district as well as a lot of independents in the northern suburbs.
This race is not a slam dunk for Bachmann at all - regardless of whether she runs against Wetterling or Tinklenberg.
I'm in the 6th District and would have preferred either Knoblach or Krinkie. Bachmann is a grandstander and I prefer pragmatists. Bachmann also has a terrible attendence record for floor and committee votes.
When I was in college during the Clinton era, my accounting ptofessors blasted Newt's Contract with America as being fiscally irresponsible. During my career, I have meet auditors who gripe about greedy CEOs who horde all the company wealth and layoff entry-level workers to cut costs. They spoke well of the idea of universal healthcare.
Thus, a CPA doesn't make one a fiscal conservative.
She can win, no prob. She's a smart, polished conservative politician.
She's no screaming b!tch like Katherine Harris, that's for sure, nor is she a nutjob like Vernon Robinson.
