PAWTUCKET, R.I. -- Among the patrons at the News Café, an airy bar downtown, the debate erupted almost as soon as Representative Patrick J. Kennedy finished making his emotional appearance on a television above the liquor bottles and colored lights.
Kennedy, the six-term congressman who represents this old factory city, said he would enter a rehabilitation clinic for his addiction to pain medication, a day after crashing his car into a barrier outside the Capitol in Washington, D.C.
Bobby LaBonte was not impressed.
''He lost my vote, I'll tell you that," said the 58-year-old former Marine, who called himself a longtime Kennedy supporter. ''He's copping out. He's trying to make it look like he's the good guy. He should get arrested like everyone else."
Not so, said Gina Culbertson, 46, the owner of the bar.
''He's human; he made a mistake," she said, taking on another, patron, Ron Hall, who pooh-poohed Kennedy's announcement. ''If you can admit it, that's a good thing. That's the first step to moving on and recovering."

The Kennedy Mayo visit is all PR.
The old media will be happy with this fluff cover story.
After the long weekend, Kennedy will be back to drinking and driving.
"He's human; he made a mistake," --- "If you can admit it, that's a good thing. That's the first step to moving on and recovering."
Ohhh, I see...are the libs ready to shut UP about about Rush now? (and Rush is NOT even an elected official)
THEY (libs/dems) always have excuses for themselves and the other side gets a MsM lynching.
Yawn. It's the Rush Limbaugh defense. Admit your mistake, get help, the minions continue to worship at your feet. He's only...human.
> Patches is always hanging out in Pawtucket, home of all those old people who are all on the dole. It is the crummiest place you can imagine...
Where do you live, snob? 90210? Pawtucket is gritty, but there are worse places.
You can stop me when I'm lying.
If he is lucky, Mayo will do a workup and refer him into rehab. They are not easy to get into on the spur of the moment.
High Court May Replace Miranda with Kennedy Rights

1 You have the right to remain silent and refuse to answer questions. Do you understand? If so, stagger randomly.
2 Anything you do say will be ignored and quickly forgotten, because youre not yourself right now. Do you understand? If so, let your chin drop suddenly to your chest.
3 You have the right to consult a public relations firm before speaking to the police, and to have your PR spokesman present during questioning now or in the future. Do you understand? If so, say: My umbersmand.
4 If you cannot afford a public relations firm, one will be appointed for you before any questioning if you wish. Do you understand? If so, allow your eyeballs to roll back in their sockets.
5 Knowing and understanding your rights as I have explained them to you, are you willing to answer my questions without a public relations expert present? If you say Yes or No, or make any sound at all, or say nothing, we will respect your right to remain silent and well give you a ride home.
"It's OK officer, I'm Cong Kennedy."
(Denny Crane: "Every one should carry a gun strapped to their waist. We need more - not less guns.")
Or, if you crash your airplane into the sea off Martha's Vineyard the Coast Guard and the Navy are mobilized to conduct an extensive search effort. If you're John Q. Public the Coast Guard would simply alert their personnel that a aircraft was reported missing ... and that would be the extent of the effort.
''As long as he does what he's supposed to do, that doesn't change my opinion of him."
I guess that pretty much explains the mentality. Even the locals don't expect any different behavior than this from a Kennedy.
I am afraid so. Rhode Island is inhabited by a mighty strange sub-species of homo norumbegensis. They elected this Kennedy clymer to state legislature when he was a wild-eyed low-SAT,doper/drinker/nutcase of 18 summers! Guess what? He ain't changed ... and neither have they!
Pawtucket is so downtrodden I guess they figured a Kennedy might be able to get them some graft while Providence Mayor Buddy Cianci was in jail, which is all the time. Unfortunately this cannot be said of the Chaffees, father and son. If you added young Chaffee's IQ to young Kennedy's IQ, the result would be the same number as the temperature of a warmish Spring day.
At one time, Pawtucket had a thriving industry creating limericks and puns based on "Pawtucket," now the general I.Q. is so low, the best they can do are malaprops, unintentional spoonerisms, and this Kennedy jerk, closely folled by Chaffee.
Before this latest Kennedy sociopath runs for Senate, which of course is inevitable, it is definitely time to revive my proposed constitutional amendment requiring that RI and DE share one Senator between them; that Senator to be selected, not elected, by a prominent psychiatrist whom I shall name.

In addition, if you left a party where alcohol was served, put two other people in your plane and THEN crashed, an immediate burial/cremation would take place to ensure no autopsy is performed to determine if you were drinking.
Patrick is self-destructing. He's having more and more problems. He was in rehab in December; he's in rehab now. With these incidents coming more and more frequently the public attention will grow and eventually there will come a time when others won't be able to cover up for him. Let's hope it doesn't take a death -- his own or someone else's -- to bring an end to all this.
