WASHINGTON - Angry conservatives are driving the approval ratings of President Bush and the GOP-led Congress to dismal new lows, according to an AP-Ipsos poll that underscores why Republicans fear an Election Day massacre.
Six months out, the intensity of opposition to Bush and Congress has risen sharply, along with the percentage of Americans who believe the nation is on the wrong track.
The AP-Ipsos poll also suggests that Democratic voters are far more motivated than Republicans. Elections in the middle of a presidents term traditionally favor the party whose core supporters are the most energized.

They are exceptions because in most cases the GOP does what it can to terminate their challenge or obstruct their run. The reason? They don't go along to get along. They stand on solid ground and the lilly livered pubbies can't have that. The last thing that the Party wants is for people to know that conservatives can get elected. They are busy telling us that we can't win, so we should just quit and throw our support to them to get some of what we want.
It's a mantra that has worked for them for a long time. I think that it's not as effective anymore. Some people are just realizing that we've been lied to. Others knew it and are just tired of it.
Yes, you did acknowledge a lot of what I said, but I thought that you treated it as just a fluke and not a worthy course of action consistently. If I misunderstood, I apologize.
I'll support solid conservatives and vote for any that I can. Those who are RINOs just will not get my support. Those who vote to take my liberty will not get my vote.
You seem to come to the same conclusion that I did, only 2 years later. I'm tired of giving them 'just one more chance'. We've been doing that for 40 years and I won't do it again.
I don't know where you live, but even after I tell you some of the crap he's done, you still want him to win? WHY?
We came within 6000 votes of removing Specter (out of 1 million votes). Specter, a 4 term incumbent, outspent Toomey by a margin of 4 to 1. He had the full backing of the GOP at every level. He had Senor Jorge Arbusto and Rick Santorum -- two men thought to be conservatives -- tell PA that they needed to reelect Specter because he was 'with us' when we needed him. Three months prior to the election, Toomey was a relative unknown and had about 15% of the vote. Those numbers grew with each passing week. He inspired people to get out and vote for him. He/we had assembled a grass roots organization that was the envy of every pol and in just a matter of months, came that close to ridding the Senate of Specter. We failed, but it was close enough to tell me that we are on the right track and we must continue our fight. Two years ago I was predicting that Santorum would lose because of what he did to Toomey. Since then, I've watched his record more closely and found him to be a self serving pandering politician with no core except himself. Now I am recommending that people vote 3rd party. I wish there was an acceptable and viable alternative, but there isn't. Ricky simply does not deserve to be reelected. He needs to get on with his life's work. I cannot and will not accept responsibility for the failure of the GOP to attract voters. My vote must be earned. It can't be bought or scared out of me.
Give me a break.
Partial birth abortion is reprehensible even to most people who are in favor of abortion. I am opposed to all abortion with the one exception being the immediate threat to the life of the mother if an abortion is not done at that moment. No exception for rape or incest.
Since Jorge lost his veto pen (apparently at one of the Inaugarl Balls) he couldn't have vetoed the bill even if he wanted to. He's never vetoed a single bill. He gets no points for me on that. Had he not signed, he would have been lynched.
O'Connor needed to be replaced, but Jorge almost put Harriet Miers in first until we had a collective fit and stopped him.
I know that you are trying hard to give him credit for something and he has done some good things, but the bad that he has done in so many areas outweigh them all.
Say hello to Nancy and Harry for me.
Who said conspiracy? But there was a recognition that he wouldn't be business as usual, so a consensus of opinion by the power elites did work against him.
He also has a power to articulate principle exceedingly well and like a good preacher, to make the sinner feel uncomfortable when confronted with his sins. Sadly, rather than repent and turn away from their sins, too many sinners decide not go to church, metaphorically speaking, of course.
Will do...call us next time you're ready to make the opposition bend instead of your own team.
I am absolutely appalled by something that happened this week.
I have a lady that comes in to clean once in a while.
She let me know she was moving back to Ohio....because the state will pay her $2000 a month to WATCH HER OWN GRANDCHILDREN. Her *29 year old* daughter wants to get her GED.
Now I am wondering if my state has such stupid policies in place. Every time I hear anchor baby, I just want to explode.
No, I don't want the Dems to assume more control than they already have, but I won't be bullied and cannot be bought and I will not accept responsibility for the failure of the the GOP to have the testicular fortitude to do what's right.
I wish that they could read the American mood as well as the Beast can. She knows that American wants border security. Now, she lies and says that she wants one too, but at least she know that we mean business. The GOP is too stupid to know it and too cowardly to do anything if they do know. Their failure is theirs alone. Their loss is their own. The blame is theirs, not mine.
I communicate with my state and federal officials. They know me by name and on sight. They know that I will not suffer their bad acts in silence and I will not be shy about pointing out their record to everyone or do it publicly.
I don't care if Casey is wonderful. He will add one vote to the donk caucus and if not balanced by a GOP pickup of a donk seat, it is one less vote for committee chairs and judges and funding the troops, etc.
It takes a very strong person to run on a party platform and then buck the leadership. I only see Ds from the red states doing that, even once in a while.
Some take that 'lack' as a postive thing.
He never learned how to be a politician in all of its worst connotations. His government and private experience were solid pluses. His knowledge of the issues and history and his ability to articulate principle were unmatched by any career politician.
He's earned my respect and trust. I'll help him anytime that I can.
I want the GOP to retain 55 Senate seats and hopefully add to them.
It is us or them. I know the left. I do not underestimate them or their agenda. There is a huge difference between the GOP and the donks. Neither may be conservative, so from a conservative POV, there is no difference. However, from my pragmatic POV and based on what I know of progressives from personal experience, I'll take the GOP in power, rather than out.
Many of us do not invest totally in any one politician. Incrementalism works....look at what we have to deal with even now, even with governmental power to the center right, just because the left has bureaucratic and cultural hegemony.
I am not going to aid or abet them one whit. No one will learn any lessons and I, my family and friends and my country will really suffer. No thanks.
If you want the democrats to win in a walk. Stay home. Its just that simple. Just dont complain when it happens.
Yes, of course, a constitutionally compliant SCOTUS is important and it would still be possible, although more difficult in either secenario, but less so with the conservative POTUS. A good Congress can keep the worst liberals off the court, or again, act to blunt a bad court. They do have the constitutional authority to restrict the Supremes.
From history, good judges are hard to find and even harder to keep that way. Even the good presidents have flubbed in making their decisions so it's a crap shoot at best except with the most solid of conservatives (like me). Give me a strong conservative congress to make me happy. Strong, principled, steel spined, uncompromising men and women of good character who understand and appreciate liberty and their role in protecting it.
Okay. So I'm a dreamer. Or a revolutionary. But I'm in good company.
Your blind spot is you think you know the left, and we don't.
Just because your name is reformedliberal, doesn't mean you're the only one. Many of us learned to hate the tiger, because we rode on it for so long.
We survived eight years of Clinton the last time a Bush sold us out. We'll survive until the right figures out it needs to fear it's own more than the left if it wants to stay in power.
Go ahead.
In fact, why don't you join the Constipation Party? It's made up of a bunch of self-righteous jerks who have never run anything but their mouths, yet they'll tell everybody that only THEY are true to the Constitution.
You'd fit right in.
Your preceptions are opposite mine.
Jorge has failed on these huge issues:
CFR -- He did a Kerry. He said he opposed it then signed it.
The borders -- He refuses to do anything.
Spending -- Worse than a fleet of drunken democrat sailors.
Education -- Giving into Kennedy and the left to greatly increase their role and their budget.
Judges (He really tried to screw that up, but we were able to stop him. Twice. He also wanted Gonzalez on SCOTUS. We forced him to do the right thing with Alito (hopefully), but we had to FORCE him. Clinton was easier to force to do the right thing by a strong House.
Specter -- He could have stayed out of the primary and Specter would be history. Instead, he is a constant thorn.
PATRIOT Act -- This is being used to justify all sorts of intrusions into our lives and for ordinary criminal cases and civil matters. It was supposed to protect us from terrorists. But now, even Cuban freedom fighters -- who fought on our side at the Bay of Pigs -- are considered terrorists because their activity was illegal under Cuban law. This law would have our Founders locked up or barred from the country they made possible for us. Had Clinton tried to get this through, he would have been pilloried. We applauded Jorge for imposing it on us.
There are not minor issues that can be used as throwaways and he's guilty on all counts.
And you hacks and your party are running us into the ground. You have no appreciation for liberty or for your duty to protect and the defend the Constitution against ALL enemies -- foreign and domestic.
You'll do what's right, only if it doesn't cost you votes.
The only thing that's constipated around here is you and you are so full of it that your eyes show it.
I agree, things could be alot worse, but with the GOP holding all houses it should be alot better.
