Rep. Patrick J. Kennedy said yesterday that he is entering treatment for an addiction to prescription medications, an announcement that comes as police continue their investigation into a car crash involving the congressman near the Capitol.
Calling his addiction a "chronic disease," Kennedy said he does not even recall the accident, which occurred early Thursday and raised questions about his behavior and how U.S. Capitol Police deal with members of Congress.
The congressman's office has said Kennedy (D-R.I.) was disoriented behind the wheel because he had taken prescription medication to calm stomach inflammation and to help him sleep. No one was injured in the crash, but Kennedy almost hit a Capitol Police car head-on before slamming into a security barrier, authorities said.
Kennedy, 38, said yesterday that he has been battling problems with addiction and depression since he was a young man and that he will seek immediate treatment at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. He was a patient there during Congress's winter break, he said, and thought he had returned to Washington "reinvigorated and healthy."...."

2? I heard the Hawk and Dove, but what other one?
Well, if he really thinks anyone will believe that pile of crap he fed the media in his formal announcement of "seeking help" he should get help, he's crazy as hell.
'for what it's worth', a few yrs ago, read in a FR thread 'bout Howie Carr(sp) of Boston radio, mentioning that some of "Patches"' assosiates used the H word; but his boozin/druggin priorities might also simply limit his sexuality....
"Gimme Hamm on 5, hold the Mayo!"
battling problems with addiction and depression since he was a young man.....
Understandable considering who his father is. I hope he gets the help he needs.
nah, he won't. He's not a Republican.
Sure thing, buddy. Popping pills, washing it down with a few beers, and smashing your car into a construction barrier is no different than catching a cold.
Acting Capitol Police Chief Christopher M. McGaffin declined requests for comment yesterday. He told Roll Call, a newspaper that covers Congress, that managers had made mistakes in judgment and that "significant" administrative action has been taken.
I'm sure the "training" involved chastising the guys for getting caught and coaching them on how to cover their butts next time. In the eyes of the brass, the only thing they did wrong was getting caught.
What a pity that Patrick's great-great-great-great-great grandfather wasn't sterile!
Oh BS! This is a GOOD career move for a Kennedy.
He should be in jail. My money is on this being a big ruse to avoid prosecution. How much do you want to bet he leaves treatmet early?
"mentioning that some of "Patches"
My daughter told me I couldn't refer to Patrick as "Patches" anymore until I found out exactly what it meant.....so can someone tell me?
another FR thread(today) mentions that Carr has a website: Carr'll know why "Patches" coined.
Most reports indicate that Kennedy is entering Rehab for treatment of addiction to "PRESCRIPTION PAINKILLERS".
But phenergan and Ambien are not "painkillers" and the accident happened as a result of side effects, not addiction to those drugs.
Pain killers are not part of the treatment of either of the conditions that Kennedy acknowleges having, i.e. depression and alcoholism, and addiction to painkillers requires a substantial and steady source of pills.
Hmmm! Sounds like a clear case of obtaining prescription drugs under false pretenses. I wonder how far that investigation will go.
I'll have the roast duck with mayo.
Thanks
I don't however think the reference to the hardworking boy in that song is a good fit with our "boy". You do remember Patrick's statement that he never worked a F.... day in his life.
Hell, maybe he never checked in.
Sign into Mayo quickly...put on a good show for the cameras..
imo
