DENVER (NNS) -- Flanked by Sailors of Navy Recruiting District (NRD) Denver, Colorado Gov. Bill Owens kicked off Denver's second annual Navy Week May 2, with a signed proclamation declaring May 5-13 as Colorado’s Navy Week.

A strong supporter of the Navy, Owens took time out of his busy schedule to thank the Sailors in attendance for their sacrifice and dedication to their country.

“I have always been a great admirer of our men and women in the Navy and the job they do in keeping our nation and the world's sea lanes secure for all of us,” Owens said. “We as a nation are better off for the long hours and hard work that each and every one of you do every day.”

Navy weeks are designed to raise awareness of the Navy’s role in communities around the country where the Navy traditionally has had very little presence. Denver is one of 26 cities that have been designated to host a Navy week this year.

“I’m excited for this year’s Navy Week and eagerly look forward to this year’s festivities,” Owens said.

NRD Denver, in partnership with the Navy Office of Community Outreach (NAVCO), planned the week around Denver’s Cinco de Mayo celebration. The annual event, which includes a parade called “Celebrate Culture,” draws thousands of interested spectators and participants to the Denver metro area.

“This year's Navy Week in Denver promises to be better than ever,” said Cmdr. Dave Copp, Navy Recruiting District Denver commanding officer. "The support we receive in Denver is second to none, and we hope to always live up to their expectations of us."

More than 90 events are scheduled for the week. Planned events will include F/A-18 Hornet flight simulator rides; parachute jumps by the U.S. Navy “Leap Frogs” Parachute Team; diving tank demonstrations by Navy divers; and performances by the Navy “Top 40” band, “The Destroyers.”

In addition, area Sailors and members of the Denver metro community will participate in community relations projects. These joint projects will include cleaning up two area parks and helping the Denver Parks Maintenance Department with equipment repair. Other activities include organizing a community-sponsored blood drive and a “Caps for Kids” event, part of a program where local area Sailors visit and give Navy ball caps to hospitalized children.

“NRD Denver is active in the communities of Colorado and surrounding states all year round, doing community service, inspiring youth, and providing fine examples of leadership,” Owens said. “It doesn’t end with Navy Week.”

Yes , that is the whole point of the weeks celebration. It is showing how the navy influences supports areas where people don't really think of the navy having a presence. And in return them receiving some appreciation for everything they do to help protect America.

With a shallow enough draft, you could go from the Gulf of Mexico up the Mississippi to the Missouri to the Platte to the South Platte to Denver.

If you believe the global warming alarmists, the melting of the polar ice caps will provide Denver with a ocean view in a few years.

Colorado has a Navy? I read recently that Americans are "geography-class-challenged", but this is ridiculous.

The Navy guys could get their SCUBA training at the SCUBA school 2 blocks away from my work in Colorado Springs, at 6,300 ft. above sea level.
