The White House added a new wrinkle to Florida's U.S. Senate race Wednesday by pointedly praising state House Speaker Allan Bense.
In an interview with the St. Petersburg Times, Sara Taylor, President Bush's political director, said Bense "would be great in any office he ran for."
Taylor said she knows Bense from her dealings with Florida Republican leaders. "I think the world of the guy," she said. "I think he's a class act, he's a very strong leader. He's somebody who is a consensus builder."
Taylor's comments were a subtle but unmistakable signal that the White House is getting more involved in the race for the Republican nomination. Many state Republican leaders want an alternative to Rep. Katherine Harris, R-Longboat Key, who is tangled in the scandal involving a defense contractor and former Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham. The deadline to enter the race is May 12.

There's only one week left. Bense had better make up his mind quick.
I know him and he's a standup guy, 100% conservative from the Florida Panhandle (conservative captiaol of the state).
He isn't a very political person (photo-ops, spin, jumping in front of a camera like Schumer and McCain).
I think we can all imagine the pressure that puts on a family person to take that next step.
Is the date for publication of this article correct?
BTW There is a rumor that Porter Goss has resigned suddenly to oppose Katherine Harris for the Senate.
So Alan Bense may have some competition.......LOL
I ran into that rumor today, but I'm highly skeptical. I heard that Goss didn't get along with the Director of Homeland Security.
It takes the biggest liberal rag in the state to write this.
I guess they want to keep the republicans informed.
Yeah right.
Allan Bense is a class act. He represents my district here in NW Florida. I'd love to see him in Congress.
I am willing to bet you that if Bense gets the nomination, he will be trounced.
While I know next to nothing about Alan Bense, I get the impression he has little star power. Now Porter Goss on the other hand..........
If she is around in the general election, I will vote for Katherine Harris.
I voted for Mel Martinez. That is the last time I will vote for a White House protagee.
Bill Nelson is not all that popular. His approval ratings consistantly hover below 50%.
And all polls show Bense polling better than Katherine Harris is.
...much?
The lates Strategic Vision shows Nelson leading Bense by 47% to 36%, while he also leads Harris by 56% to 24%.
How much do you want to bet?
Ahhh, the St. Pete Times - I wonder how cold it is in their part of Russky in early May. What? The St. Pete Times in Florida? Even more of a Stalinist outfit than the Russky's.
POINT OF ORDER - - - - - -
Does Allen Bense have to 'qualify' for a run for U.S. Senate, - - first ?
If so, he has until May 8th - two days from now, boys !
CIA Chief Goss had a run in with the head of the Department of Homeland Security ?
Isn't that Julie L. Myers ?
Debbie Schlussel has been savaging Myers in a series of articles over the last few months . .
