Puerto Rico Government Shutdown: Is the Governor Taking His Cues from Television's "The West Wing"?
El Vocero de Puerto Rico (Spanish-language article) ^ | May 5, 2006 | MarĂa Vera

(English-language translation)

In the midst of the fiscal crisis that keeps 95,000 [Puerto Rico] public employees out on the street, several [opposition] New Progressive Party Representatives held a press conference to show the episode of a television series that, in their opinion, demonstrates that Governor Aníbal Acevedo Vilá is pulling a publicity stunt out of the situation.

Representatives Liza Fernández, Albita Rivera, Georgie Navarro, and Rolando Crespo met with the island’s press to watch the episode of an American television series.

The reason behind the [press] conference was to demonstrate that the Governor has copied the actions of the series’ main character, the President of the United States.

“Those who have watched ‘The West Wing’ may notice that the Governor treats the island’s crisis as if he were in a current feature film,” Fernández maintained.

“It should be clear to the people that this sad situation is a stunt by the Governor which is evident in one of the series’ episodes. The Governor is at his worst moment and, using the plight of the public employees, is trying to change his reality,” she added.

The legislator indicated that the Governor created the crisis to improve his image.

“It’s surprising how the Governor, using his dramatic skills, has copied this episode to try to deceive a people who are jobless, a people who don’t know if they will have something to eat, a people who are asking for solutions. However, the Governor focuses on fictitious dramas to try to change public opinion,” she added.

That's what I'm hoping for. I told my dad, who still lives on the island, that as the weeks go by and folks realize that nobody had their birthday taken away, that the sun still rose and set, in general, that life continued pretty much as it always has, that folks would come to a realization.

That they are paying taxes for government services that add no appreciable benefit to the taxpayers. Once that happens, the social engineers will have a harder time trying to get reelected.

Just my $0.02 worth.

Best Regards

Sergio

Is it still on TV? What's the point? Maybe their have a 'gay' president to go with the other 'female' president. Or maybe they can just have a mexican President now to try to flank the PR stunts being carried out by the media and anti-US forces in LA.

The first time I visited there, in 1972, I was astonished to see what striking telephone workers did - they cut down the telephone poles! Wow! I will never forget that.

PR sure is a pretty place. The rain forest is fantastic and some of the beaches are superb. Also a great place to dive(scuba).

Thanks, Sergio!

"Menee el perro."

To those living north of the Río Grande (illegals excluded), that's Spanish for "wag the dog".
