Special Treatment For Rep. Kennedy?
CBS ^ | 5/5/06 | staff

(CBS/AP) Washington is abuzz this morning with questions about Senator Edward Kennedy's son, Congressman Patrick Kennedy, D-R.I., and whether he got special treatment after wrecking his car on Capitol Hill.

Kennedy remained in his office until after 10 p.m., but when he left, he said, "I never asked for any preferential treatment." Asked whether he received it, he said "that's up for the police to decide."

As CBS News correspondent Joie Chen reports, Kennedy says he'd taken a prescription anti-nausea drug that can cause drowsiness, but consumed no alcohol, before crashing his car near the Capitol.

In a statement, Kennedy said the attending physician for Congress had prescribed Phenergan to treat Kennedy's gastroenteritis, an inflammation of the stomach and intestines.

Kennedy said that after working Wednesday evening he went home and took "prescribed" amounts of Phenergan and Ambien, another drug that he sometimes takes to fall asleep.

In his statement, Kennedy said he was apparently disoriented from the drugs when he got up a little before 3 a.m. Thursday and drove to the Capitol thinking he needed to be present for a vote.

"Following the last series of votes on Wednesday evening, I returned to my home on Capitol Hill and took the prescribed amount of Phenergan and Ambien," Kennedy said. "Some time around 2:45 a.m., I drove the few blocks to the Capitol Complex believing I needed to vote. Apparently, I was disoriented from the medication."

Nobody died when THIS Kennedy lied

The old "Do you know who I am?" defense. I never asked for what I obviously deserve.

Though he did say he was a Congressman on his way to a vote

And what a horrible advertisement for Ambien. It's supposed to make you sleep, not drive like a drunken Kennedy.

I believe driving while asleep was in the news a while back, something about the sleeping pills, lawyers probably advised him that this is his defense.

On Hugh Hewitt yesterday, Tom Delay said that, had it been he, CNN's camera's would have been on the scene before the crash.

He thinks he can blame the drugs, not his alcoholism, apparently.

Why are the names of the higher-ranking officers who interfered with the sobriety test never mentioned? Interesting.

It seems the spotlight is only on Kennedy, and not on those officers.

I'll be pleasantly surprised if they are ever named.

Was not it last month he was involved in a auto collision at a drug store parking lot in NJ. Said he was on his way to get a Rx refill.

I simply cannot understand why the people of Mass and NJ keep electing the Kennedy's and Kerry type. Teddy should have served time for man slaughter. Kerry should have been kicked out of the Navy as a traitor. You don't explain lies to congress and four trips to meet the enemy in Vietnam and Paris.

My solution for congress is to load ALL of them on a plane and drop them into north Korea and hope that twit is stupid enough to keep them.

Yeah, but he's been in rehab for drugs, too.

I think it is stipulated in the Federal Code (or the Constitution) that a Rep. or Sen. cannot be detained while en route to a vote.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.
What a family of weasels.

I would love to see his cell phone log and who he called when all this took place. The slightest misstep around the Capitol these days draws a ton of police. I ride a commuter bus into DC every day and at least once a month we are stopped at a checkpoint and boarded by police.
