(CBS/AP) Washington is abuzz this morning with questions about Senator Edward Kennedy's son, Congressman Patrick Kennedy, D-R.I., and whether he got special treatment after wrecking his car on Capitol Hill.
Kennedy remained in his office until after 10 p.m., but when he left, he said, "I never asked for any preferential treatment." Asked whether he received it, he said "that's up for the police to decide."
As CBS News correspondent Joie Chen reports, Kennedy says he'd taken a prescription anti-nausea drug that can cause drowsiness, but consumed no alcohol, before crashing his car near the Capitol.
In a statement, Kennedy said the attending physician for Congress had prescribed Phenergan to treat Kennedy's gastroenteritis, an inflammation of the stomach and intestines.
Kennedy said that after working Wednesday evening he went home and took "prescribed" amounts of Phenergan and Ambien, another drug that he sometimes takes to fall asleep.
In his statement, Kennedy said he was apparently disoriented from the drugs when he got up a little before 3 a.m. Thursday and drove to the Capitol thinking he needed to be present for a vote.
"Following the last series of votes on Wednesday evening, I returned to my home on Capitol Hill and took the prescribed amount of Phenergan and Ambien," Kennedy said. "Some time around 2:45 a.m., I drove the few blocks to the Capitol Complex believing I needed to vote. Apparently, I was disoriented from the medication."

Nobody died when THIS Kennedy lied

Though he did say he was a Congressman on his way to a vote
And what a horrible advertisement for Ambien. It's supposed to make you sleep, not drive like a drunken Kennedy.
I believe driving while asleep was in the news a while back, something about the sleeping pills, lawyers probably advised him that this is his defense.
He thinks he can blame the drugs, not his alcoholism, apparently.
In a word: Yes.
Why are the names of the higher-ranking officers who interfered with the sobriety test never mentioned? Interesting.
It seems the spotlight is only on Kennedy, and not on those officers.
I'll be pleasantly surprised if they are ever named.
And take his worthless relatives with him.
Went to vote on their behalf on an imaginary vote at 3:00 AM
Yeah, but he's been in rehab for drugs, too.
And someone check should be checkin on his bar tabs as well.
That does not suprise me, in the least.
I had not heard that. Can you find the link??
I would love to see his cell phone log and who he called when all this took place. The slightest misstep around the Capitol these days draws a ton of police. I ride a commuter bus into DC every day and at least once a month we are stopped at a checkpoint and boarded by police.
This is a little better...

Thanks. I'd been looking for a photo, but came up empty so far. That's a good one! :-)
