SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO - Crossings of Cuban boatpeople towards Puerto Rico have surpassed those by Dominicans, according to [U.S.] Border Patrol spokesman Victor Griffin, who stated that these will increase if the law granting political asylum to all Cubans who reach U.S. territory is [not modified].
Griffin said that while crossings of Cuban boatpeople from Dominican Republic towards Puerto Rico increase, "the ones by the Dominicans has been diminishing."
He said that Cubans are increasingly using Mona Island as a bridge to get to Puerto Rico. "We are receiving less Dominicans and more Cubans and that tendency is going to continue while the policy remains to give asylum if they touch North American ground," he said.
Griffin was referring to the "Law of Cuban adjustment," which grants political asylum to any Cuban who manages to arrive at United States territory. He stressed that that is Puerto Rico’s case, with Mona island being the route most used by Cubans to reach that goal.
In the fiscal year so far, which began last October, the Border Patrol has processed a total of 512 Dominicans, compared with 548 for the same period last year.
In the case of the Cubans, in this fiscal year 496 have reached Puerto Rico, compared with 485 who arrived last year.
But...but...but...Cuba is a worker's paradise. It's led by a fair-minded, dignified and peace-loving man named Fidel Castro.
Why would anyone want to leave? Life is so good there under a true socialist govt where everyone is well and happy.

Actually, Cubans have made a real contribution to Florida and have assimilated. I hear the ones coming now are much poorer, though, and don't have as much to offer.
You are correct. I live in FL..... Cubans are dwarfed by other "Spanish"immigrants these days. From Caribbean, Central America,Dominican Republic, tons of Mexicans,Guatemalans in the fields and construction work
