School Soda Ban •Major Soda Brands Agree to Halt Sales to Public Schools The nation's largest beverage distributors have agreed to halt nearly all soda sales to public schools, according to a deal announced Wednesday by the William J. Clinton Foundation. Under the agreement, the companies have agreed to sell only water, unsweetened juice and low-fat milks to elementary and middle schools, said Jay Carson, a spokesman for former President Bill Clinton. Diet sodas would be sold only to high schools Cadbury Schweppes PLC, Coca-Cola Co., PepsiCo Inc. and the American Beverage Association have all signed onto the deal, Carson said, adding that the companies serve "the vast majority of schools." The American Beverage Association represents the majority of school vending bottlers. The deal follows a wave of regulation by school districts and state legislatures to cut back on student consumption of soda amid reports of rising childhood obesity rates. Soda has been a particular target of those fighting obesity because of its caloric content and popularity among children.

The stats recently showed that the average student bought less than a can a week. I was not surprised to see Clinton's name attached, because like so much of his 8 year administration, this is an emotional appeal, a "feel good" move that accomplishes, in the end, absolutely nothing.

No...I am sure they don't, but we know that Hillary is a socialist and wants to run our lives..and it starts with kids.
I am convinced that the reason that the schools are so bad, is because a lot of the teachers and administrators are the children of the "flower children"...and have no concept of what schools were like..when their parents went.
And now, they are taking all of the blame for fat kids from their parents to the schools...
One thing though...the schools that have cut out recess and PE need to get it BACK...the kids need the exercise...I had PE every year...and my kids didn't have PE after junior high...
I really don't understand, at least from this article, what the heck Bubba's Foundation has to do with this...
Finally ... with soft drinks out of the way it leaves more time to practice homosexuality, witchcraft, abortion, anarchy, drug addiction and all theother approved courses of study in public education today.
Wasn't it the Clinton administration that allowed soft drink companies to put soda machines in public schools?
The school board has the authority to determine what may and may not be sold on school grounds.
I find it interesting that it's the evil mean profiteering corporations which are saving our children from too many cokes and not the caring compassionate school board which only seeks what's best for the children. (sarcasm off)
IIRC, soda machines were banned in CA schools about 25 years ago. (...though I think that I've seen them on local campuses since. There may have been a lapse in the ban or it may have been just my district. I wasn't paying particular attention to the issue.) At my high school, the administration removed the soda machines from the lunch area. However, they didn't know about the machine in the varsity boys' locker room; and our coaches weren't about to tell them! On at least one occasion, I helped one of the coaches smuggle in a fresh load of sodas to refill the machine.
Wonder how much the milk industry had to pay our pal the government to get this done?
I am absolutely opposed to Great National Daddy Bubba's involvement in this matter. But at the same time I do not understand why any parent would defend carbonated beverages, nutritionally. Those "sodas" are nutritionally negative; that is, they affect adversely the physiological utilization of certain mineral nutrients. Occasional consumption probably does little harm, but they should not be drunk to the virtual exclusion of water and milk. Above all, they should not be sold in schools, and it matters not a whit whether the "diet" or "un-diet" version is chosen.
No. There were soda machines in my JR. High and High school, I graduated in 1993, so at the very least it was Bush 1's term

My complaint is about Bubba's involvement....I especially remember his "runs" to McDonalds during his presidency.
So for thousands of teenagers, they have been blessed with the "permission" from the POTUS, to have oral sex and eat junk food.
BTW...my granddaughter is a diabetic...and we pack a DIET SODA in her lunch everyday, because she can't drink milk or juice.....so there are exceptions to most rules.
Thank you, I was beginning to think I was only one here who cannot understand this zealous defense of having junk drinks accessible to our kids in a place where we as parents have no control or monitoring capacity. 2 of our 3 kids *love* soda, and will choose it over anything else if given the chance. The third just doesn't like it, and will chose water or milk.
I've never thought it was a good idea to have soda in the schools, and the politics of whose idea it was to get rid of it is irrevelant.
What the heck's the matter with you people? We never had soda in the schools when I was growing up. Why should we have that freakin' fizzy sugar water in schools? Why don't we let them watch cartoons all day and play video games while we're at it. Sheesh.

I don't know. What the heck's the matter with you? Anyhow, I don't really care whether they sell pop or not. I just think it's funny that they think they need to monitor what the kids eat and drink. I mean, c'mon! Low fat milk only? Diet pop? "Unsweetened" juice? Moreover, even more hilarious, this only deals with school lunch programs. The schools will keep and continue to cash in on the coke machines down the hall.
