Taiwan's President Chen Shui-bian has dropped plans to make a brief stop in Alaska en route to Latin America, in an apparent snub to Washington for vetoing a high-profile visit.
"President Chen will not stop over in Alaska on his way to Paraguay," said foreign ministry spokesman Michel Lu. He declined to comment on reports that Chen might visit Libya.
Lu said it was uncertain whether the president would stop over in Alaska on his way back from Latin America.
Shortly before his departure, Chen accused Beijing of thwarting his earlier plans to make a more high-profile visit to a number of unspecified US cities.
Washington rejected the proposals, saying Chen could only make refueling stops in Hawaii or Anchorage, Alaska.
"China suppressed Taiwan in the international community... It bullied our friends not to let our high-ranking officials visit or make transit stops," he said.
"We have to see clearly China's one-party authoritarian rule and its disrespect to Taiwan's people and government," he said.
George Tsai, a professor at National Chengchi University's Institute of International Relations, said Chen's decision to cancel the Alaska stop reflected his anger that Washington had vetoed his earlier plans.
"Chen felt humiliated by Washington's heavy-blow so that he chose not to stopover at Alaska but he might still do so on his way back home to save face for the US," he said.
China opposes any overseas visits by top government officials from Taiwan.
Beijing regards the island as part of its territory awaiting reunification by force if necessary although the two sides separated after the end of a civil war in 1949.
whatever China wants from the US government (both parties) - it gets.
Sounds like China will take over Taiwan without firing a shot.

Bush won't fight for Taiwan and he leaves our boarders open. I think I see a plan here. If Latin America, the USA and Canada all become one block then the "we can take the USA in a war" view of Chinese generals becomes less possible. Could it be that's where this is all going. India blocks from the south and the EU from their west.
they're helping to pay fedgov's bills, so it surely gives them some pull.
Flame on.
This story is sickening.
Why is it that the US is always the one being punked, and never the one doing the punking.
We should invite Chen to sleep over in the Lincoln Bedroom and scoff at friggin China for getting upset. They would do NO LESS to us.
You're absolutly right, sadly.
Bush has shown that he's no leader of the free world, he doesn't believe in the freedoms associated with this country and even more so if it embarasses him to fellow leaders (fox and the militiamen aka vigalantes, the gal who spoke up to Wu at the press conference, McCain/Finegold). While he pretends that the opinion of the worlds leaders don't matter to him, he will insult americans and any other freedom loving people if they embarass him.
