Reid: The Bush Tax Plan Leaves the Middle Class Behind

5/3/2006 2:44:00 PM

To: National Desk

Contact: Jim Manley or Rebecca Kirszner, 202-224-2939, both of the Office of Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid

WASHINGTON, May 3 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid today issued the following statement on President Bush's tax plan to put multi-millionaires ahead of middle-class families.

A fact check on President Bush's tax plan follows below.

"Earlier this week, Republicans offered a pittance of a rebate to gas consumers and the American people saw the plan as the gimmick it was. The Bush Republican tax plan is just like the Bush Republican gas rebate plan. Bush's tax plan offers next to nothing to average Americans while giving away the store to multi-millionaires. The tax reconciliation bill giveaway on capital gains and dividends will do much more for ExxonMobil board members than it will do for ExxonMobil customers. America can certainly do better than that."

---

FACT CHECK: President Bush's Misguided Tax Cut Plan

FICTION: Bush Suggests that His Capital Gains and Dividend Tax Cuts Benefit Average Americans. "If the people have their way who want this tax relief to expire, the American people will be hit with $2.4 Trillion in higher taxes over the next decade. That's 2.4 Trillion that would be taken out of the pockets of firms . . . taken out of the pockets of those who are raising their children." (5/3/06)

-- FACT: Those Making Less than $50,000 Received Less than $10 in Tax Relief from Capital Gains and Dividends Tax Cuts.

As if Harry knows anything about the middle class or even cares.

I know for a fact this statment made by Reid is BS.

The Dumbocrat party with Ried as its head clown continue to lie, and lie, and lie some more, to support their sad agenda.

what a bunch of pathetics.

What is Searchlight Reid offering for me?

Oh, right, punish the oil companies by taking profits away that would have gone into exploration, R&D, etc.

You know, I'm getting sick and tired of this Democratic charade that they somehow care about the middle class.

It's time for the Democrat Party to put up or shut up. I don't want to hear any more of Reid/Pelosi/Kennedy/Kerry/Schumer/Durbin/anyotheridiot whining about the Bush tax cuts "leaving the middle class behind." If they're so concerned, maybe they should promote their own tax plan that would benefit the middle class they allegedly care so much about.

It's been 5 years since the Bush tax cuts allegedly "for the rich" passed. Where's the Democratic tax cut for the middle class? You'd think they'd propose something if they were truly concerned.

But they're not, and that's why they're so full of crap on this issue, among all others.

Class envy BS. Repubicans are smart enough to know you cannot play Robin Hood and help the economy.

Democrats criticize the tax break, but will never lower taxes themselves.

Less than $10 in Tax Relief from Capital Gains and Dividends Tax Cuts

Odd....our big winner in our 401k last year was capital gains...and we are certainly not rich.

As far as I'm concerned, Harry Reid is a "middle-class behind."

The most productive and effective tax cuts, in regard to impact on the economy, are tax cuts to the rich. These are the ones who take those tax cuts and actually plow them back into the economy in meaningful ways -- placing them in investments, investing in their own businesses, and the like. Joe Sixpack gets a tax cut, and what does it go toward? -- a flatscreen TV, and maybe paying down credit card debt. Nothing wrong with that, but in terms of expanding the economy, building businesses, and creating new jobs, tax cuts for the rich result in these kind of pluses.

Well Harry Reid, all I know is Bush43 cut taxes close or into a recession, went after a bunch of a$$wipes in Iraq, Afghanistan and other countries and cleaned up the stockmarket to protect investors.

And within a very short time frame, there is extremely low employment with millions of new jobs created, investment in the market, more money in people's pocket books, more people owning homes, awesome GDP numbers, fighting a war and only using 1% if the GDP to do it, and on and on it goes.

I still don't understand why Bush43 only polls 30 to 40 percent approval with such a great economic numbers. Oh yeah, the drive by media doesn't want to report the good.

You know, already a large part of the middle class gets their federal taxes back without paying a cent at the end of the year!

Bush's plan would HAVE to skip much of the middle class. They already DON'T pay income taxes!

Fiction:

Most of the above article.

Fact:

Tax cuts have had an enormously positive impact on economic growth, increased revenue to the treasury and millions of new jobs while the wealthiest 1% are paying a HIGHER percentage of taxes than before the 2003 tax cuts.

DUH!! How many people who make less than 50k actually receive capital gains or dividends??? I bet this was an "average" of $10 for ALL people who make less than $50k.

The middle class will always benefit when "the rich" get tax cuts because "the rich" will convert that money into ever more employement/sales opportunities for the middle class. The "rich" will reinvest that money into their own businesses, which in turn employ more people, or they will spend that money on items for themselves that provide profits and employment for middle-class workers and businesses that supply those items. Class warfare ONLY WORKS when people give in to the temptation to indulge in envy and coveting what belongs to others -- two of the Seven Deadly Sins. Avoid them and speak out against them if you want to help build a better world.

How about Reid's support for the illegal invaders who are largely responsible for the decline of the middle class. If it weren't sad this clown would be way too funny.

All I know is that since this President came into office, my income taxes have declined and the economy is booming. Eight years of Clintonomics didn't help me at all. The Dems keep changing the definition of "poor" and "middle class." Whenever they do decide to throw a few crumbs, it's to those people who already have breaks by virtue of their low income. Those of us who make a little more get taxed to death.
