A 7.8 is still an extremely strong earthquake. Our area rode out a 7.9 a few years ago and a kazillion aftershocks (ok, maybe not a kazillion of them...but thousands. LOL)

Yeah, the first was a preliminary magnitude, I wouldn't be surprised if it gets changed again.
TONGA NUKUALOFA should be seeing the first signs of any tsunami right about now.
The mag of the quake doesn't really have much to do with tsunami generation, vertical shift is the main factor.
