A '60s Buzz Recycled - Teens Rediscover Morning Glories Can Be Used as a Hallucinogen

They have such whimsical names as heavenly blue, crimson rambler and pearly gates, and delicate blooms that crawl quickly up trellises.

But when morning glory seeds aren't planted -- when they are instead ingested -- whimsical thoughts can crawl through altered minds with kaleidoscope-like visions.

Kristy Peterkin, whose family owns Ayers Variety and Hardware, says the owners caught two teenage boys stealing "13 or 14 packs of these seeds."

And teenagers know this.

Once popular in the hippie era of the 1960s, morning glory seeds as a hallucinogen seem to have sprouted once again. Local gardening shops have noticed their seed stocks depleted by adolescent hands, and poison control centers in the District and its suburbs have received calls from hospitals with patients experiencing adverse reactions, or bad trips, from the seeds.

"They are certainly being used," said Chris Holstege, a doctor who runs Virginia's Blue Ridge Poison Center. "Kids are getting brighter. Between the Internet and magazines like High Times, they are learning about this."

If your usually bored, angst-ridden teen develops a sudden interest in gardening, watch out.

From the article.....

"You have to eat a lot of them," he said. "I know it lasts between six and eight hours." A friend of his had done it, he said, but he hasn't.

"I never felt I had enough time to sit there and eat 500 seeds," he explained.

It doesn't seem worth it, but people will do almost anything to get high.

These kids need jobs.

Tried it once about 35 years ago. No high but plenty of nausea and some vomiting. Not a lot of fun.

Sounds like another crisis. I guess the only thing we can do is make the plant illegal, expand the War on Drugs by millions and start generating junk-science reports. Oh yeah, and these morning glory seeds aren't like those in the 60s - the seeds produced today are WAY more potent. :-)

I'd like to invite the teens to clean up the morning glory seeds on our farm. LOL

From Wikipedia:

The seeds of many species of morning glory contain d-lysergic acid amide, ergoline alkaloids better known as LSA. Seeds of I. violacea and R. corymbosa are used as hallucinogens. They are about 5% to 10% as potent as LSD. To discourage morning glory's use as hallucinogenic drugs, some commercial seed producers have started treating seeds with a chemical that will not wash off. This chemical has been known to cause vomiting, nausea and abdominal pain. Typically some form of a warning or notice is printed on the package if seeds have been treated.

I though the stuff was a weed and I pull it out when I see it. I didn't realize people bought seeds and actually planted the dang stuff.

The fact that you DIDN'T mention spraying them from cropdusters makes me think you aren't really serious about eliminating this scourge on our youth.

Absolutely. If bindweed is so hallucigenic, maybe I only think I'm spraying it and I'm really drinking the spray or something.

From the web.....

Addiction Potential: Since Jimson weed's effects aren't generally considered pleasurable, addiction usually isn't a factor.

I guess they can attest to that.

Can't we just leave the cropdusters to Al Qaeda?

Didn't they start coating MG seeds with something back in the 70s to prevent kids from doing this?
