HARTFORD, Connecticut (AP) -- Louis Rukeyser, a best-selling author, columnist, lecturer and television host who delivered pun-filled, common-sense commentary on complicated business and economic news, died Tuesday. He was 73.

Rukeyser died at his home in Greenwich after a long battle with multiple myeloma, a rare bone marrow cancer, said his brother, Bud Rukeyser.

As host of "Wall $treet Week With Louis Rukeyser" on public TV from 1970 until 2002, Rukeyser took a wry approach to the ups and downs in the marketplace and urged guests to avoid jargon. He brought finance and economics to ordinary viewers and investors, and was rewarded with the largest audience in the history of financial journalism.

Too bad. He was a great fellow with a sharp wit and common sense that was very uncommon these days.

He had a programme which was on CNBC - his approach was refreshing, particularly in contrast to the savages that beat each other to death on Fox News' "Bulls and Bears".

Regards, Ivan

I kinda break people down into two categories. Those I would love to sit down and have a beer with, and those I avoid like the plague.

This guy was near the top of the beer list! Funny as hell, a GREAT mind when it came to economics (he always urged us to never forget the basics).

He will be missed.

When I first got interested in 'preparing for my future' W$S was mandatory. Most of the time he was hopelessly optimistic, however, even when not warranted.

I LOVED Louis! He always reminded me of George Washington...
He was so smart and funny- he will certainly be missed.
I have experience with multiple myeloma, and I am glad that he is at peace now and is no longer suffering.

IIRC his long running show was on PBS, and the departure or end of that show was not very nice. It was like the network dumped him. I enjoyed WSW for many years. He had to be as one person has mentioned, a long lost relative of George Washington. The hair sure made him look like George.

Told my girl that I needed to watch WSW cause Louis is so funny and I learn a lot. She didn't really get it but teased me for a couple of years by trying to call the cat to watch when she heard the music for the "funny man".
Already missed him. Sorry to hear of his passing.

Very sad - he was smart and funny, a rare find in the vast wastelands of television.

R.I.P. Louis.

I really liked this guy's demeanor. Listening to financial advice from "your old uncle Louie" was always entertaining. He will indeed be missed.

I learned more about economics and the free market from listening to him than anything I was taught in a classroom. Another stupid move on the part of public broadcasting was getting rid of his show.

Godspeed, Louis.
