he new Republican presidential candidate must be agile, quietly brilliant, intuitively political, a cross between Franklin Roosevelt and Ronald Reagan -- overwhelmingly charming and deceptive enough to achieve our national goals without anyone seeing his lips or his fingers move. Who's waiting in the Republican wings that fits that description? Few, if any. ...
.....So how does one choose the right man? C. Northcote Parkinson of Parkinson's Law fame had the answer. For every impossible job -- as per Winston Churchill or FDR in World War II or Reagan in the Cold War -- there is only one person who fits the bill. He called it a short list of selection. The times are so challenging that a prospective candidate might best be described, in caricature, by a help-wanted ad for the job.....
....Who among the contenders would be courageous enough to respond to such a daunting ad? Only one: Sen. John McCain of Arizona. Why? Is he so hopelessly ambitious to suffer indignity for his personal goals? Perhaps, but more important, he seems to be the only one who has that in-born authentic patriotic spirit that requires him to sacrifice for this nation. Plus he seems to have the sense of destiny, shared by Washington, Lincoln, FDR and Reagan -- that he is the only one of his time capable of the onerous job of a president under shattering fire. .....
.....In summation, Mr. McCain is the only presidential candidate possible for the Republican nomination. And as a plus, he is the only one who can defeat any candidate the hapless Democratic Party can put up, especially Hillary Clinton.

Don't forget the promise of a 90% Bill of Rights.
Who needs that old First Ammendment when what we really need are honest politicians who cannot be tempted by political donations? Of course we could elect honest politicians but that would just be too much work. Better to keep going with the crooks we have now but restrict their access to campaign funds. All we have to do is sacrifice our rights of free speech. Welcome to McCain's America.
Fair enough. I do agree McCain is not a conservative candidate.
Unfortunately, I highly doubt that the GOP will nominate one.
It doesn't, sorry. I was responding to the overall article.
There's a lot I don't like about McCain (CFR still gets me), but he has two major advantages to me over any others people are speculating about:
1) He can win. He has the position to pull a lot of votes from the Democrats, especially those people who aren't conservative but hate the way the Democrats are going. I would also like to again see an election won by more than a normal statistical margin of error so the victor can say he has a clear mandate from the people.
2) He's not a party lackey. I would like people to run the government again, not parties. George Washington warned us well on that issue.
He may not be the best, but he's the best we have.
McPain will never get the nomination. He is a psycho ala Dean.
Duplicity, abrogation of the first amendment, and derangement?
You mean these? I thought they were just bad satire:
The times are so challenging that a prospective candidate might best be described, in caricature, by a help-wanted ad for the job.
"Wanted: A president of the United States. Must be willing to work 110 hours a week, setting aside time to fight the light heavyweight champion of the world before lunch. He must be anxious to suffer psychic torture by daily watching Oprah and Katie Couric on television in the Oval Office, then be interviewed by Mike Wallace -- all the while conducting four simultaneous wars throughout the globe as commander in chief. Must be willing to face editorial demonization by the media, tussle with congressional opposition including threats of impeachment from Sen. Russ Feingold, while dealing with Cabinet officers being discharged for corruption. He must be able to handle a low 20 percent approval rating without losing heart or his natural optimism.
Most important, the president must be willing to die in office as a symbol of his dedication to the American people, a love affair that will not be requited until 30 years later. Apply Box 101, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue N.W., along with a non-refundable deposit of $10 million."
The author never gets around to saying how McCain will implement "our" agenda. And he only offers two reasons why McCain should be the nominee---that he was tortured in Vietnam, so handling the media will be a snap. And that he "seems" to be the only one patriotic and capable enough to do...whatever it is that will push "our agenda" forward.
There is only one way I will vote for McCain in 2008-- if he absolutely promises to fulfill the job requirement in bold.
He's so full of sh@t, his feet smell. He will lose his base right after the election, and then the Democraps will smear him to pieces. His "principles" are for sale, and my guess is even his tough guy act is BS. I want no part of that phony
Powder..Patch..Ball FIRE!
McCain has nothing to offer me and if he is the nominee I'll sit out no matter who the democratic contender is.
McCain seriously considered a vice presidential run with John (I served in Viet Nam) Kerry. Do you consider that the sign of a SANE PATRIOTIC candidate?
Maybe, but he can't govern. You can't govern if your base is in revolt. Greed for power at any cost will be the undoing of us here, for starters, if we ignore the truth.
Bush with his spending profligacy and immigration policies is bad enough. McCains judicial appointees wouldnt even be conservative, IMO. Disaster.
i THINK Condi is too much marching to the puppet masters' tune. But so will be anyone allowed to run.
I think we'd best put lots of pressure on her to run.
As a possible alternate, how is the Governor of Indiana doing?
The MSM desperately want McCain to be the GOP nominee.
Then they will drag out all that Keating 5 stuff out of the closet and put Hillary Clinton or worse in the White House.

Sounds EXCEEDINGLY like their plan, to me.
Capitulation
Demagoguery
Inflammatory rhetoric
Demagoguery
Unhinged diatribes before bewildered audiences
Demagoguery
Lots... LOTS of media presence
Demagoguery
Unprecedented assaults on precious Constitutional liberties
Demagoguery
Did I mention Demagoguery?

Well put. Very well put.
I did that with Perot. Have regretted it ever since.
The devil incarnate IS worse than the devil's assistant.
Serious Barf Alert!!
Absolutely NOTHING......
Me too, Quix.
Although I think Perot was right on many of the issues, all it got us was the Sink Emporer and Her Thighness. I won't vote third party ever again. I still consider myself a conservative independant, but vote Republican.
I just wish they were more conservative. Right now they are pretty much what the old Democrats (Scoop Jackson type) used to be. I fear we have gone too far down the pleasing path to socialism, and are too far gone to turn back.
