The organizers of yesterday's "Day Without Immigrants," who are also responsible for other recent demonstrations demanding special treatment for illegal aliens, have betrayed not only the people they claim to be helping but everyone else who is trying to find a rational and civil answer to an incredibly complex issue.
With their psychotically provocative behavior, these radical lunatics of the Left are moving the ideological goalposts of this debate toward the restrictionist Right. Unless they wise up, by the time they're through every politician in this country outside the inner cities will be paying lip service at the very least to a serious crackdown on illegal immigration.
You can see it happening already. Even before yesterday's shameful frolics, Hillary Clinton had begun talking about building a border fence - where, back in March, she was taking a soft line, complaining about Republican legislation in shockingly grand terms and comparing illegal immigrants to Jesus Christ. With her finger stuck way high up in the air to feel the distant breezes of 2008, Hillary realized that the air currents were changing.
Maybe a few months ago it seemed like good politics to be courting Hispanic voters by offering words of support for illegals. But Americans in both parties are now paying far more attention to the issue, and polling shows they just don't like the idea that the laws of the United States are being violated with impunity.
Being soft on illegal immigration is beginning to look like the new millennium's version of being soft on crime.

The leftists media was in full force spinning their liberal agenda fairytales!
I've been thinking about this whole protest thing - it seems to me that primarily they are asking for "benefits" although they are not citizens, they are looking for "benefits" - from America, benefits that they cannot get in their own country. Now, that is really odd.
A goodly portion of them were probably hard at work in the sweat shops making more white t-shirts for the next March For Anarchy.

or 2) had no planning or thought go into it at all

I vote for #2.
These ANSWER/anarchist/commie organizers believe that street theater is productive. They have not won anything since they re-started their efforts in Seattle at the WTO meeting in 1999. All they do is illustrate who they really are to "ordinary" Americans, and energize "ordinary" Americans to keep our country on a right path for a few more decades.

LOL!
I surmise, based on news reports, that not many pols, not even amnesty sponsors, Teddy and McCainiac, were visible at the May 1 rallies.
Another indication that anti-illegals is one of the few consensus issues, one that cuts across the entire political spectrum.
If you read the whole article, it appears it's not on the right side of things. I'm disappointed in this column.

LOL........we should get a "Country without Illegals" bill passed.
It's okay. I'll get over it. I just need to be alone right now.
If it would fit, I'd make it a tagline. No truer words were ever spoken.
The VRWC doesn't have to have paid organizers or spokespeople. When one's peers are logical and believe in absolutes, the truth speaks for itself.
Some lowlife drug lord actually told these morons that Americans are a bunch of suckers who cannot see past the smoke and mirrors, and that we would sit still for their amnesty bill.
The druggies are hiding behind the backsides of vote-hungry US elected officials bandying about the bill that treats these lawbreakers better than law-abiding US citizens.
No one is impressed by this cadre of spineless marionettes dancing limply on the strings of corruption, manipulated by the unseen alien horde puppetmasters lurking behind the scenes, ready to pounce on US assets.
Make that rhyme and put it to the tune of the Mexican National Anthem. ;)
LOL.......nice zinger.
"Unless they wise up, by the time they're through every politician in this country outside the inner cities will be paying lip service at the very least to a serious crackdown on illegal immigration."
Am I missing something here? Is it just me or does this statement seem to be out of step with the gist of the article? I would think he meant every politician will GET SERIOUS ABOUT A "crackdown on illegal immigration", NOT "pay lip service".
Maybe it's just me.
There is already a crackdown on illegals at workplaces in Texas. Illegals are fleeing to other states to avoid being deported. I think we Texans should put up huge signs in Spanish naming the liberal states most hospitable to illegals and encouraging them to move there.
