The organizers of yesterday's "Day Without Immigrants," who are also responsible for other recent demonstrations demanding special treatment for illegal aliens, have betrayed not only the people they claim to be helping but everyone else who is trying to find a rational and civil answer to an incredibly complex issue.
With their psychotically provocative behavior, these radical lunatics of the Left are moving the ideological goalposts of this debate toward the restrictionist Right. Unless they wise up, by the time they're through every politician in this country outside the inner cities will be paying lip service at the very least to a serious crackdown on illegal immigration.
You can see it happening already. Even before yesterday's shameful frolics, Hillary Clinton had begun talking about building a border fence - where, back in March, she was taking a soft line, complaining about Republican legislation in shockingly grand terms and comparing illegal immigrants to Jesus Christ. With her finger stuck way high up in the air to feel the distant breezes of 2008, Hillary realized that the air currents were changing.
Maybe a few months ago it seemed like good politics to be courting Hispanic voters by offering words of support for illegals. But Americans in both parties are now paying far more attention to the issue, and polling shows they just don't like the idea that the laws of the United States are being violated with impunity.
Being soft on illegal immigration is beginning to look like the new millennium's version of being soft on crime.

It's so predictable. Think amoral, traitorous, and you have the dem position of the day on anything.
JPod (as he is known on the National Review website) is esentially a cultural liberal who is on the side of the open-borders lobby. He is just upset that these marches are making him look stupid now.
".. the Left are moving the ideological goalposts of this debate toward the restrictionist Right."
I noticed that too. I was thinking..... so, now people who are for securing our borders and enforcing our laws are now the "restrictionist right".
If they aren't that they are racist, too lazy to work, etc. I'm sick of the bashing of Americans who believe in upholding the rule of law in this country!
That 11 or 12 million number defies common sense, as if they weren't pouring over the border every day. Closer to double those numbers.
Not just Dems these days though. Dangerous to say on FR these days.
costs presented by illegal aliens at a time when the economy is growing at a rate near 5 percent, personal incomes are up, manufacturing is skyrocketing and unemployment is near historic lows
As any bean counter knows, the balance sheet is where the real shuffle takes place. In the case of illegals, one cannot reasonably assert that they are not having a negative impact on Fed/State liabilities.
It's the knowledge of back-loaded debt that supports criticism of the so-called economic benefits that illegal aliens represent to this country.
Lemura
Podhoretz sympathizes with the amnesty crowd and sees no problem the high level of illegal immigrants in the population. His concern is that the issue is playing out in a way he does not like.
If the RWC is so V, why doesn't it have a propaganda arm yet? Where are our Sunday television shows? Our Meat Press, our Phase the Nation? Where is our newspaper of record with all the news fit to print? Why can't we even churn our cage liners like the NYT? And what about our Time and Newsqueak?
Clueless!
Thx for posting this.
I received this from Howard Dean. Don't ask me how they got my name because I don't have a clue!
Dear ME:
I wanted to pass along to you a few testimonials and photos from volunteers like you who were out in force this weekend:
http://www.democrats.org/april29photos
This past Saturday, in over 1,000 communities across the country, Democratic volunteers had over 1 million conversations with their neighbors about the future of our country. Our candidates for every level of office, both incumbents and challengers, joined experienced canvassers and first-time volunteers in an unprecedented day of national action.
Together we're doing something extraordinary -- integrating our party operations from the precinct level up, and using technology to open our party up to ordinary Americans who want to be part of the change we desperately need in this country.
If you took part in the canvass (or want to tell us why you didn't) please take the time to fill out this short survey:

Thank you, and stay tuned for the next big step in on the road to victory in 2006 and beyond.
Governor Howard Dean, M.D.
P.S. -- Below are few of the testimonials from volunteers that you'll find on the April 29th photos page:
Virginia: "It was great! We had 8 in all, four seasoned canvassers and four college students who had not canvassed before. We paired up and had a great experience. Got some names of interested volunteers and generally felt we had pretty good results for a mostly Republican area."
North Carolina: "We had 6 volunteers cover many of the streets in our precinct. I am the Precinct chair, we got organized in 2005, and this is a great leap forward in building our precinct committee. With the voter stats from the walk list, we will be able to tell if our efforts made a difference street by street. I put together a local flyer with a sample of the ballot we will use on Tuesday's election, and which candidates got endorsements from the local progressive groups. Many of the people we talked with were appreciative, and will be using our guideline at the polls."
Ohio: "Today was a huge success. Targeted precincts were canvassed. Hundreds of Dems were touched personally for the first time in years and dozens of those signed up to volunteer efforts for the coming Election season. Watch us grow in Southwest Ohio!"
