MEXICO CITY -- A daylong protest dubbed "A Day Without Gringos" drew thousands of Mexicans into the streets Monday and kept many away from U.S.-owned supermarkets and fast-food restaurants to support rallies in the United States.
Some Mexicans said staying away from U.S. businesses was tough, and customers streamed into some branches of Wal-Mart, McDonald's and Burger King in Mexico City.
Wal-Mart shopper Juan Ortiz, a 28-year-old salesman, said he supports legalizing migrants, but didn't think it was practical to boycott U.S. goods. "You have to buy what is least expensive here, and I have to buy things for my family," he said.
In Tijuana, across from San Diego, Calif., about 400 boycott supporters blocked half the access lanes to an international bridge to discourage Mexicans from crossing into the United States to shop.
However, it was hard to measure the boycott's impact because business is usually reduced to a fraction of normal volume on Mexico's May Day holiday.

As the bully on the Simpsons says: "HA-ha."
add this to the no s*** sherlock file
... showing the obvious complicity of the Mexican government.
My wife's store (DeKalb, IL) was busier than usual on Monday, with several shoppers stating that they were out specifically because of the boycott.
Our country didn't collapse. All these illegals did was to prove that we can function VERY WELL WITHOUT THEM, THANK YOU!!
They just proved our point, as far as I'm concerned!
"...customers streamed into some branches of Wal-Mart..."
Ha, try a day without China sometime. Good luck there.
Hahahahaha!!
What boycott? It was business as usual here in SE Tennessee.....
Hard for a Mexican to do without a CH-evy!
I very rarely write my senators. Stabenow and Levin are tone deaf to anyone but rabid liberals.
I did note, however, that on their FDM website feedback site, only LEVIN had an option to select "Immigration" as an email subject. Dangerous Debbie's site didn't allow it so I had to use "Other."
My tag is more appropriate than ever. This woman is pathetic.
"Above all, we want legalization, because many of them have lived . . . up there for many years," said bus driver Venancio Chavez, 47."
Could someone explain the logic behind that statement?
"With her finger stuck way high up in the air to feel the distant breezes of 2008, Hillary realized that the air currents were changing."
My favorite part. Thanks for the link.
NO MEXICO VACATIONS!
Once you go Gringo, you never go back.
Mexican mobs 'demonstrated' in front of the US embassy in Mexico City and were kept from committing mass violence by police. How long before they burn the US embassy down? The MSM kept silent about Mexican mob violence in Chula Vista last night. Not a peep heard about it in the east this am. The friendly MSM, not a discouraging word about our 'little brown friends'. (Which is exactly what the MSM thinks about Hispanic illegals. The MSM is racist.) They're the little people who can be persuaded to vote democratic -- the new house slaves. No wonder Jesse's worried. There's only so much walking around money to be passed out.
I've been carping for years that the neo pundits have an attitude of condescension and patronization toward authentic conservatives.
They all are very foreign-interventionist, but have rather a personal distaste for military service within "their own kind." I truly detest what they have done with Buckley's National Review. The NRO is now nominally pro-choice and there isn't a single evangelical voice on board. NOKD.
None of the neos believes that Joe Sixpack really knows what's good for him, a deadly liberal tendency. Joe Sixpack knows that he's being invaded, his wages driven down, gangs are moving into small towns, his car insurance has to pay for scofflaw illegals--and Joe Sixpack is also being asked to send his son to protect the borders of Iraq.
What is also not being discussed is the effect this surrender to Mexico is going to have on the creds of the WOT.
