I left CA 3 years ago and they DID try to make me pay a leaving tax! Franchise Tax Board kept sending me letters every year telling me how much I owe them, since I failed to file a CA return. Haven't gotten one this year yet. Luckily my husband's a tax guy who can write them letters, because they kept trying to make me prove I didn't owe them money.

They did the same thing to my brother when he moved to
Alaska.

The way that works IMO is the will bug you as long as they think they can collect.
Almost seems not to matter that you probably owe them nothing. That is only a mild secondary matter of little consequence to them.

Taxing is like a blessed act to government types in this state.

When I worked for China Lake NAWS, there was a lawsuit about CA trying to tax people's pensions when they moved to Nevada (no state income tax there). The end result was that CA couldn't tax a pension even if it was earned in CA. (I imagine because if a person moved to a state with a state income tax, then they'd be taxed twice). I can't believe CA even tried something that underhanded.
