Mexican president urges prudence during immigration marches [A Day Without Gringos]
KTEN.com ^ | May 1, 2006

MEXICO CITY Hundreds of Mexican union members took to Mexico City's streets today to back Mexican migrants living and working in the United States.

They're also showing support to boycotts U-S goods in Mexico in what's called a "A Day Without Gringos."

At least a half-dozen state governors in Mexico endorsed the boycott of McDonald's, Wal-Mart and other U-S firms here. But measuring the impact of the actions was likely to prove difficult. Mexico celebrates May First as the International Workers Day holiday, when business is usually cut to a fraction of normal levels.

Federal officials have tried to distance themselves from both the U-S and Mexican protests. Mexican President Vicente Fox yesterday urged Mexicans who plan to participate in the protests to be prudent.

The fact that they are calling it a "A Day Without Gringos" shows that racism, rather than immigration policy, is the motivation here. As such, Catholic prelates in Mexico and Los Angeles should be ashamed of themselves for supporting such blatant racism and hate-mongering.

Today I had a Commute Without Illgeal Aliens. I wish they'd punish us with some more rallies, maybe 2 or 3 times a week would be nice.

A couple of local businesses have posted that they only employee legals and invite customers to review their policy and verification procedures. Hope this becomes a trend.

Heh, I could live with that. I'm quite happy not going to Mexico at any point.

Today was actually pretty good so far! I'm here at school, and all the illegals didn't show up today.. In fact, I haven't seen a Mexican flag all day. And here, that is pretty rare. Haven't heard any spanish, or any complaints about not getting special treatment from those 'racist gringo etc, etc's"..

What Catholic Prelates are supporting this? I don't think any. Also, its time to take a deep breath on this and start looking at the details of these articles. I know its early in the day but the article mentioned just hundreds marched. Hundreds not tens of thousands or even thousands. A very small number.

"A Day Without Gringos" shows that racism

I'm not sure why. "Gringo" isn't perjoritive, and, outside of parts of Chile has no connotations with "race" (in Southern Chile, it means "Brazilian", generally of "mixed race"). There is a slightly impolite Spanish reflexive verb, agringarse, meaning to "act like a U.S.A.-nian" but it's extemely rare: such people are usually called "malanchistas" (from La Malanche, Cortes' Aztec mistress).

There are folk tales about the origin of "gringo", but it goes back to mideval Spanish -- a corruption of "grego" (Greek) as in "it's all Greek to me" or, historically, Orthodox Christians, as opposed to Latin Rite Christians -- allies of the Castillians in the struggle against the Moors, but a bit odd by their reckoning.

"Gringo" is no more a race than "Mexican" or that bureaucratic invention "Hispanic".

Maybe you meant it was anti-USAnian (a neat invention of a Colombian friend who objects to calling us "Americans" and him something else).

Congrats on your enlistment. You're going to be part of the proudest fighting machine ever, the US military. Seems like the other day for me but, unfortunately, it was almost 40 years ago.

Good luck to you.

I doubt Vicente Fox looks down on a day off from work without pay in the U.S. - it means his little army of workers will be missing his share of their paycheck.

He bases his economy on the money paid in cash to the protesters.

So, I'm concluding that your opinion is that it's not a slur
for "gringos" to again call illegal Mexicans "greasers"?

When the Catholic church sheltered pedophiles, faithful became upset. Now that it shelters illegal aliens AND pedophiles, a lot of people are going to begin equating Catholic politics with sin.
