The Chinese authorities have compensated the mother of a youth who died after being beaten in police custody during the 1989 crackdown on pro-democracy protesters, in the first known payment of its kind. A human rights activist said yesterday that police in Chengdu had reportedly paid 70,000 yuan (£4,800) as "hardship assistance" to Tang Deying, who has campaigned for 17 years for an official apology and redress for the death of her son.

Did they at least take the expensive organs out of him?
It took the ChiComs 17 years because they wanted to be sure that the kid wasn't just lost in a slave labor camp somewhere, putting together flip-flops for Wal-Mart.
Well, it's easy to throw stones at them for beating him in the first place, and for waiting 17 years to compensate. On the other hand, I'm surprised they did it at all. Maybe they are inching their way toward civilized society.
The Chinese are civilized, it their government that needs to come to terms with reality.
So, murder by cop is only a civil case in China?
