Anti-war protests are limp. It's a wait-and-see attitude in the U.S.
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | April 30, 2006 | John H. Bunzel

Not a day passes that we don't see another poll showing that a majority of Americans believe President Bush and those at the top rungs of his administration have so badly mismanaged the war in Iraq that they now oppose it.

Yet even as support for the war has shrunk to an all-time low, we have also seen how anti-war organizers have struggled to mount large, intense and nationwide demonstrations reminiscent of the mobilization of hundreds of thousands who marched against the war in Vietnam 40 years ago.

The question is why.

...... Another reason is that Iraq is not Vietnam.

"The Vietnamese did not carry out suicide attacks on their own people," the New York Times columnist David Brooks has pointed out, "or go around the world rioting over cartoons or fly planes into skyscrapers." The war in Iraq has an element of "existential menace" that Vietnam did not have.

But we should not forget that a majority of Americans were sympathetic to the goal, and always understood the value, of helping Iraqis fight for a democratizing outcome.

This is perhaps one of the strongest reasons why a big, angry anti-war movement has not taken to the streets by the hundreds of thousands. At least not yet.

Interesting opinion piece, worth reading. ARticle written by a far left liberal, with some interesting points.

Liberals and MSM have tried AND FAILED to make Iraq equivalent to Vietnam.

It's a good title, especially considering it appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle.

I think they are frustrated, that they can't whip up some "real" antiwar fever, as in Vietnam -- even with Kerry's best efforts.

MSM, jihadists, and time have worked together to erode support for the Iraq War. Anyone who supported it in Feb. 2003 (I think the approval was over 75% at the time) should support it still.

Maybe some of the war protestors should finally grow up and realize we're not in the 1960's anymore.

At least not yet.

But there's still hope, right?

Especially the MSM. FReeper Allegra in Iraq seems to spend about half of her FReeping responding to gloom and doom posters who swallow the MSM line of Iraq civil war, chaos and anarchy. No wonder she needs R&R!

Great article!

The bigger question is why there is any anti-war movement at all in light of the obvious existential threats.

The only real answer is a media and academia dedicated to proving the false analogy of Vietnam and Iraq. The analogy is the lynchpin of a relentless though failed strategy to bring democrats back to power.

Americans ought to be directed more often to this near treasonous behavior.

The Communist driven Left just keep repeated that the War in Iraq was wrong. Most Americans who witnessed 9/11 have enough horse sense not to buy appeasement as a viable option.

Mohammadans...the "Existential Menace".

LOL! Reuters now calls them "extremists," but this is even better! I'd wager good ole Dennis [the Menace] is po'd having his name appropriated like this.

LOL!

That's what is really driving the liberals crazy -- that Bush got reelected.

Liberals and the MSM no longer have a monopoly on the news thanks to talk radio and the Internet. No longer can their lies be reported as the "truth".

There was a good article about that very thing:

The article left out one very important fact.
Americans have finally seen the hardcore of the anti-war and anti-American marxist-leninists for what they really are.
Those who are financing and co-ordinating these protests are certainly not the ANSWER that they so eagerly claim, but are now seen as and more commonly referred to, by a far more fitting acronym:

C-ANSWER

.
