With no immediate solution in sight to immigration issues, demonstrators are calling for a boycott to underscore the economic power of immigrants.
Millions of people, including those in the U.S. illegally, are expected to skip work and boycott businesses nationwide on Monday.
However, some are hoping a simple e-mail message will slow that boycott's momentum.
Millions of Americans log on to their computers to check their e-mails every single day, and some people are taking advantage of the current era of cyberspace technology to voice their opinions on immigration reform by forwarding mass e-mails.
To all the real Americans, you can do one small thing on May 1st: Spend money to counteract those boycotting businesses to show their support for illegal immigrants."
That's the message some people are circulating on the internet.
I think the Americans should get out there and spend their money, says Al Garcia, a native Tucsonan.
Garcia says he's against anybody intentionally skipping work on Monday or avoiding spending their money to make a political point.
When those illegals and their supporters do a boycott like this, they do a disservice to the Mexican Americans that are from here," Garcia says.
Garcias says when he sees the mass e-mail going around saying, "Hold off grocery buying until May 1st , and If it needs to be bought, buy it May 1st , he takes an opportunity to show that the country isn't totally dependent on illegal aliens.
Theyre exaggerating about the issue, says Miguel Escobedo, who is a naturalized U.S. citizen.
Escobedo plans on skipping work on Monday to show his support for illegal immigrants, and doesn't feel like the e-mails from those on the other side of the issue will make much of a difference.
Theyre not going to stop us from being part of the boycott and marching on Monday, says Escobedo.
Jim Doligale, a Tucson resident, says, "You can spend as much money as you want, but many businesses will shut down anyway."
However, Garcia and others against the boycott and illegal immigration say that every dollar spent on May 1st counts.
Get out and buy things that you would have bought last week to save it till Monday, says Garcia.
Border Awareness PING
I'm buying a big ticket item for my business tomorrow, I could have done it last Friday but waited because of the boycott.
I doubt this will be an issue here in NJ, knee deep in immigrants (many illegal I have no doubt) as we are. But I'll say this any business I find closed, or dysfunctional on Monday will not get my business in the future.
I can only urge all others, esp. those in the west and southwest to do the same.
I don't have a lot of spare cash to go on a shopping spree tomorrow but I will spend something. I may even go window shopping at the local mall. Just to make someone think I am shopping.
A firm in NC has some Hispanics who do not want to join the boycott but fear that enroute to work, they will be crossing "picket lines" and be hurt by the boycotters. The Company President has offered to pick these workers up, bring them to work, and to drive them home tomorrow.
Securing our borders extends beyond illegal workers. Articles like this shift the focus away from where it should be: protecting us from ALL illegal border crossings - terrorist, drug trafficker and all other.
He's not the only pissed off American-of-Hispanic origin.
I will spend 3 times my average daily spending during their boycott day.
The Mexican invaders will do us all a big favor by showing dramatically how unnecessary they are to the economy.
IN any sane world the illegals would be rounded up where they gather themselves and kicked out of the country. We might not get them all, but a large number could be easily caught and deported.
The illegal aliens want to send us a message. I want to send them a message: "You are a negative influence. You are unwanted, uninvited, and unneeded. Go HOME!"
""You are a negative influence. You are unwanted, uninvited, and unneeded. Go HOME!"
That should be printed on banners across America.
We were planning to make a fairly major purchase today but decided to put it off until tomorrow. Also, I'm buying all our birthday presents for May and June tomorrow.
Yes they do more than a "diservice" to you all and all Americans.
It is a threat to this nation!!
The socialist communist nazi must be not only deported but thrown out on their butts!
I am so tired of hearing about their ignorant march already , they will inflame all Americans tomorrow!
Amen!
Actually the banner wasn't my idea, my ex-girlfrend had that same banner over her door last time I tried to see her.
I guess she is some kind of immigration activist, although I don't remember her mentioning it before.
If you feel invaded, imagine how the native americans feel! If you honestly want to cut back on illegal immigration I suggest that you go back across the Atlantic to your homeland!
You people are so pathetically lacking in your commitment that the most you can "sacrifice" to your "cause" is to engage in yet another shopping spree. Why don't you be true to the racist undertones in all of the comments about "illegal" immigration and realize what you truly are.
While I'm sure that you all won't find this comment all that favorable, it's sort of a shame that you're so lacking in self assurance and burdened by unacknowledged guilt that you don't even have the courage to read statements that reveal how vacuous your ideas truly are. If this is the last post I make you can count on it being a result of your moderators shielding you from things that might otherwise contaminate your fragile minds.
Don't flatter yourself.
It stays, you go.
Remember: Monday, May 1st, is National Turn In An Illegal Alien Day.
Thanks for leaving a part to play with!
