A day in the life of President Bush (4/30/06): photos of correspondents dinner

PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: President and Mrs. Bush attended St. John's Church this morning, as is their custom when spending the weekend at the White House. Last night they attended the annual White House Correspondents' Association dinner, where the President and his "alter ego," comedian Steve Bridges, stole the show.

The best review I found is on USA Today's website. Since I'm not sure how much of their material we can excerpt, I'll just provide a link. The article includes a nearly complete transcript of the President's and Mrs. Bridges routine.

IMO Colbert was unwatchable.

I agree -- and I didn't watch him. Only had the sound on in the background while I was on the thread last night. Hearing him was bad enough.

You get those boys from Comedy Central (Stewart, Colbert) away from their studio and put them in a live situation and they are about as funny as Al Gore wearing his strap-on beard.

Well said. In fact, your comment is funnier than Colbert was last night. :)

running from the building chased by veteran White House correspondent Helen Thomas."

LOL! Did they really get the old bird to do that?

That's the thing. On paper, that's funny. The comedy could write itself.

But somehow, Colbert found a way to turn that into something just as boring and unfunny as the rest of his act.

The routine between the President and Bridges was wonderful.

I just saw the replay on CSPAN. I got about two "jokes" into Colbert's act and I turned it off.

You have a strong stomach to make it through even two "jokes."

Colbert's nastiness was out of control--off the charts. I stared in amazement until I shut it off.

I guess so. Didn't watch that part of the event.

How about Colbert's mannerisms when he did Scalia? It was simply unbelievable. Was Scalia actually there to witness that?

Now that you mention it, I think so. Harmon is married, so I hesitate to assume Steve was escorting her.

Bush was great, Colbert was awful. I watched part of it, but couldn't stand how rude he was. For an evening that is supposed to be fun, Colbert sure didn't make the grade. I hope the correspondent's association issues an apology to the President over his outrageous performance. The only benefit out of last night's performance by COlbert, is that IMUS can finally say he wasn't the worst.

ROFLMAO!!! You just have to put this Gentleman's Quarterly pic of Ace on the AI thread this week. It's funnier than Colbert's routine.

"But somehow, Colbert found a way to turn that into something just as boring and unfunny as the rest of his act."

What a shame. Well, I never heard of this guy before, so no harm no foul.

Jonny, remember a couple of weeks ago when Simon told Kelly Pickler that "on paper" he thought her song choice would never work, but it turned out ok. And it was clear she'd never heard that expression before? I found that quite charming. Of course these things are confusing if you don't know their meaning.

Nice to see Ace extending his 15 minutes, good luck to all contestants, imho. Is he of Macedonian descent, and was that why he was at the Embassy's party?

Man, DC is probably the king of all party towns, when you get right down to it.

It will never happen, unfortunately.

I was actually thinking the same thing about IMUs! LOL
