Party delegates pick Angelides (CA Dem Convention)

Adding some needed oomph to Treasurer Phil Angelides' down-in-the-polls campaign for governor, California Democratic Party delegates voted Saturday to endorse him over opponent Steve Westly.

And it wasn't close. Angelides received 67.2 percent of the delegate vote, compared to 28.1 percent for Westly late Saturday, the same day a Los Angeles Times poll showed Westly with a 13-point lead among likely Democratic primary voters.

Now, Angelides heads into the June Primary with bragging rights. It was the first time the party had bestowed a pre-primary endorsement in a contested governor's race in 16 years.

Voting took place Saturday evening, and the 1,923 delegates assembled had three choices: Vote to endorse Angelides. Vote to endorse Westly. Or vote for the party to make no endorsement. Only a candidate with 60 percent support could earn the party's imprimatur.

A fiery speaker, Angelides was the crowd's darling -- delegates booed when he mentioned Schwarzenegger and President Bush and many waved blue Angelides signs.

Angelides' tax honesty a good thing

Phil Angelides, it seems, is either going to become California's next governor or go down fighting. The state treasurer has staked his claim to the office on his proposal to raise billions of dollars in taxes to balance the budget and expand government.

Angelides calls himself a champion of "progressive values." As state treasurer, he has pushed public pension funds to dump tobacco stocks, invest in urban renewal projects and pressure corporations into cleaning up the environment. A close ally of labor, he also supports abortion rights, gay marriage, gun control and driver's licenses for illegal immigrants.

If he makes it into a general-election race, his call for increasing taxes could pose problems; Schwarzenegger has been steadfast in opposing higher taxes.

Milk Club goes for Angelides

http://www.ebar.com/news/article.php?sec=news&article=791

State Treasurer Phil Angelides won the Harvey Milk LGBT Democratic Club's endorsement in his bid for governor Tuesday, April 25. The club's decision mirrors that of the Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club, which endorsed Angelides over state Controller Steve Westly earlier this month.

There was another article on FR that said the dems thought Westley was more "electable." Heh.

Angelides presses tax-hike goals

http://www.sacbee.com/content/politics/story/14247882p-15065380c.html

Speaking on a stage, left, as well as a big screen, Treasurer Phil Angelides tells the California Chamber of Commerce at the Sacramento Convention Center that he wants higher taxes on corporations and the wealthy. The Democratic candidate for governor made a plea for "partnership and sacrifice" by businesses.

Candid if not popular, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Phil Angelides told the state's business leaders Tuesday that if he's elected, he'll be asking them to "invest in our people" by paying more taxes - a campaign pledge that didn't exactly play well with his audience. It even caused a few in the crowd to walk out.

He'll drive the remaining taxpayers out of California, making way for the illegals.

Since you seem to be such an admirer of the Dems, with only praise for them, never a word of criticism, maybe you should register as one.

It seems that polls now have Westly ahead and in a match-up with Arnold, there is a tie between Arnold and Westly, but Arnold is leading Angelides.

But the delegates at the Dem convention decided to support Angelides. Boxer and Feinstein also endorsed Angelides.

I am the one who is advocating the defeat of the Democrats, unlike some people here, claiming to be conservatives, who are advocating the defeat of Republicans and victory of the Dems.

maybe you should be careful what words you utter here towards others, lest they come back and be your own undoing and the party's as well.

You mean this one. There seems to be some discrepancy between the results of voting at the Dem convention and the polls of the Dems. But while they may disagree in whether to support Angelides or Westly, their only consideration is which is the most likely one to beat Arnold.

Ability to beat governor emerges as key concern among Democrats

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1623981/posts

His reason for potentially flipping allegiances illustrates a growing problem for Angelides, a millionaire land developer and former party chairman who has most of the party's establishment behind him. Despite Angelides' solid Democratic credentials, many Democrats see Westly as standing the best chance of beating Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in November.

"Our single focus is to beat Arnold," state Sen. Martha Escutia, D-Norwalk, told delegates as she introduced Westly. "Let's be very clear and not mince words — Steve is the only man for that job."

Both democrats and repubs will get to decide by voting in the primary.

Letting the state delegates choose means nothing.

Hey, vengeful one, I think FO is right and the ilk is fantastic at spamming threads in attempts at 'undoing'. 'Undoing' is what the ilk do best. FO suggested you register demonrat. I contend you already are.

Yes; that's the one. Just proving the dems have no plan except to beat the incumbent. Angelides has been attacking Arnold since his (Arnold's) first day in office; no doubt this is why he was more attractive to the dem establishment.
