Ability to beat governor emerges as key concern among Democrats

Until recently, Doug Case supported state Treasurer Phil Angelides for governor, but the 51-year-old Democratic Party delegate said he's beginning to change his mind.

"If you asked me a few months ago, I would have said I was voting for Angelides. But now I'm probably leaning toward Westly," said Case, a coordinator for fraternities and sororities at a San Diego university, who attended this weekend's California Democratic Party Convention. "My top priority is to defeat Arnold."

His reason for potentially flipping allegiances illustrates a growing problem for Angelides, a millionaire land developer and former party chairman who has most of the party's establishment behind him. Despite Angelides' solid Democratic credentials, many Democrats see Westly as standing the best chance of beating Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in November.

A Los Angeles Times poll released Saturday showed that likely voters in the Democratic primary view Westly as the better bet to unseat Schwarzenegger, by 37 percent to 18 percent.

"Our single focus is to beat Arnold," state Sen. Martha Escutia, D-Norwalk, told delegates as she introduced Westly. "Let's be very clear and not mince words — Steve is the only man for that job."

1. If Arnold is "no different from the Dems", why are Dems so focused on defeating him?

2. How come that even the Dems are smart enough to figure out that the most important thing in picking a nominee, is his ability to defeat the opposition?

If they want a dem who's "electable," what about John F'n Kerry? Isn't that why they selected him? Look how well that worked out. BWAHAHAHAHA!

It remains the only pursuit or agenda the libs have - power and control. They have no issues, no plans, no vision, no leadership -- why?? Because they don't need them when their total agenda is socialism and power over the people.

Nothing new or profound really, but every time they open their mouths, they again prove the point.

What is amazing that half the population still haven't figured out that "Dems are NOT the answer" because they don't have any solutions.

Stuck on stupid. These people do not think, they do not follow politics, most of them could not even tell you how our government works. They don't know and they don't care. The libs have been telling these sloths what they want to HEAR to make them feel good, and that is all they need.

Pass the kool-aid please...

How very appropriate for this gunernatorial election cycle. The process is a winner and has been adopted by both major parties. The process will repeat itself until the state government sinks under its own bloated weight.

When things get really bad, the California electorate will look to a social and fiscal conservative to bail them out. They were looking hard in 2003 but the Wilsonegger gang adopted that Democrat strategy and California sank back into the ooze for another three years. Expect that sinking to continue under a liberal, Republican governor until 2010.

Proud to have run for party chairman in 1989.

Proud that you elected me Controller in 2002 -- because someone needed to beat Tom McClintock.

With the dems, it seems to always be about politics and power. God forbid they do anything of substance for the BENEFIT of this country or its citizens.

What really bothers me is the GOP is falling more and more into the same direction. Witness the pandering to Hispanics, kowtowing to Muslims by calling it a religion of peace when Islam means "submission", the slathering of cash "in kind" to the wealthiest demographic in our society through the Free Drugs for Geezers program......

HELL'S AFIRE!!!!!!!!! HALF OF THE POPULATION PAYS ONLY 4% OF THE INCOME TAXES........

Sorry about that outburst, but if the Mod who's on this shift is a real conservative it will be there for Tony Snow to see. I sure hope a special note is sent to him about all the sabre rattling regarding the FR poll concering illegal immigration. It appears 50% of the base or so is about to leave the GOP in '06 regarding immigration.....and that's just immigration.

Read my tagline, if you have the courage, you bunch of inbred second cousins of John Kerry who have somehow come to control the GOP.

Little did you know that you were directly addressing one when you posted your reply.

Or did you?

I don't tell everything I know.

My tagline still says all that needs to be said regarding this matter, along with the results of the poll over there in the sidebar.

Actually, I thought I might be adressing someone who cared about the future of this nation more than simply holding power.

Did you catch the other thread where Calies were (push)polled on immigration reform? 42-43% were for 'comprehensive' and amnesty vs. closing the border and then talking about guest workers.

Recall Arnold's backtracking after saying the border needed to be closed shut. A near 50% voting block (heads) is nothing to shake a stick at.

Angelides admits to wanting to raise taxes to throw billions more down the education rat-hole. Westly would probably use these funds to pay for free abortions for every 14 y.o. in the state, whether they needed one or not.

That someone cares alright.... about Republicans simply holding power.

The account has no guiding political philosophy; no core values beyond blind, partisan loyality. The account simply cares that a Republican wins. That Republican could be a communist, a socialist, a liberal (as is the present case), a moderate, a conservative or a fascist. The account only cares that it is a Republican.

But again I suspect you already knew that. The account is infamous.
