INDIANAPOLIS -- An editorial in the Ben Davis High School newspaper caused controversy and led to some minor unrest at the school Friday.
The opinion, written by students, denounced illegal Hispanic immigration and the nationwide walkout scheduled for Monday.
The editorial, titled "Migrant Slack-Off Day Also Known As May 1" takes up almost an entire page of the paper. It is unsigned and reflects the views of a student editorial board, 6News' Jeremy Brilliant reported.
Some students told 6News there were fights in the hallways and verbal confrontation -- including racial slurs -- after copies of Spotlight were handed out.
"It was disrespectful kind of, and I figured at school, that would never happen, but I guess it can happen anywhere," said Ben Davis junior Charles Allen.
"It wouldn't be fair if they turned the tables and did that to the other people, so it just wasn't fair," said senior Daren Vicknair.
In the column, students wrote: "Illegal immigrants are doing nothing but breaking our laws."
Another portion of the editorial read" "If these Illegal aliens think they are making a difference in our society, they have another thing coming," alongside a caution road sign picture depicting a man, woman and child running.
"That was rude. They shouldn't have put that on there in the first place. That's basically saying, 'Caution, watch out for the Hispanics,'" said junior Melissa Rodriguez.
A journalism advisor approved the piece. Wayne Township Schools spokesman Tom Langdoc advocated a point-counterpoint type of editorial for future papers.
Student Alfredo Camacho, who was born in the United States to Mexican parents, said he was personally offended.
"(It's) like saying, 'We don't want you in our school.' We're all there to get an education and it just kind of makes you not want to go," Camacho said.
School administrators did not endorse the editorial, but said they do agree with at least one part, which asked students to come to school Monday instead of taking the day off.
Another station said the school sent out apologies and the advisor was being investigated for approving the editorial.
Also know as "Illegals Celebrating a Communist Holiday".
That's a cogent, thoughtful remark, kind of. I guess.
To the anchorbrat, illegal alien school kids, you are not the boss of American kids!
So shut up!
Go back to mexico and see how you will get away with this Cr*p there!
Words mean things. So do flags. So does graffiti, which is also a form of hostile flag-raising over turf that is not your own....
New MSM lie: anti-illegal=anti-hispanic. It was even repeated by a highschool junior in this story.
The one good thing about all of this is that the idiots in government can't hide and pretend this isn't an issue any longer. However, I work with a Democrat who opines frequently about how it is Bush and his cronies who let the illegals pour in. The MSM seems happy to avoid stating exactly where the Dems stand on the issue. I want to see the Republicans point some fingers and point out that it is the Dems are doing everything in their power to welcome these people in with open arms and keep them here.
In the column, students wrote: "Illegal immigrants are doing nothing but breaking our laws."
Well, that part is certainly true.
"Article One: The freedom of the press shall not be abridged unless it offends politically correct criminal aliens..."
If you were born in the U.S., then it's not about you, fool, so get back to class.
Stalin's Useful Idiots Day
All this business of referring to Hispanics and Latinos as a race is simply neo-stereotypism acting as a corollary to the now political incorrect refererences once popular where they were considered hot-blooded, wildly romantic, mysterious and alluring.
If the majority of the illegal immigrants were Canadian and they poured over our borders in the same numbers and then went on to loiter on every available street corner, parking lot or playground speaking in an unknown dialect, we would still resent them.
Well I guess the right is taking cues from the left in hyperbole journalism.
Not surprised though, given the "journalism" teachers of today.
Politically correct rules and prohibitions will only let the pressure build...
It will get uglier.
The governments of Canada, Ukraine, China, et al are not assisting the flow of illegal immigrants the way the government of Mexico is.
In a sane world, if his parents are illegals, he would be too!
His attitude speaks most eloquently on the rational justification and necessity for that. He does not really consider himself American.
Could you explain, for the non-progressives among us, just exactly which part is "hyperbole"?
