Bush Set to Approve Takeover of 9 Military Plants by Dubai
NY Times ^ | April 28, 2006 | JIM RUTENBERG and DAVID E. SANGER

WASHINGTON, April 27 — President Bush is expected on Friday to announce his approval of a deal under which a Dubai-owned company would take control of nine plants in the United States that manufacture parts for American military vehicles and aircraft, say two administration officials familiar with the terms of the deal.

The officials, who were granted anonymity so they could speak freely about something the president had not yet announced, said that the final details had not yet been set and that Mr. Bush might put conditions on the transaction to keep military technology in the United States.

But his action is almost certain to attract scrutiny in Congress, because of the political furor that erupted over the administration's approval of a deal earlier this spring that would have given another Dubai-owned company, Dubai Ports World, leases to operate several American port terminals through its acquisition of a British company, the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company.

Dubai Ports agreed to drop the port deal after it became clear that Republicans were abandoning Mr. Bush and opposing the takeover.

In this case, the plants in question are owned by Doncasters Group Ltd., a British company that is being purchased for $1.2 billion from the Royal Bank of Scotland Group by Dubai International Capital, which is owned by the United Arab Emirate government.

Because the plants make turbine blades for tanks and aircraft, the deal was reviewed by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, which sent it on to Mr. Bush himself for a decision, a step used only when the potential security risks or political considerations are particularly acute.

Administration officials alerted Congress that the deal would go through the committee's review process in an effort to head off the kind of public debate that surrounded...

Bush and his clique in Washington D.C. do not believe in free markets or capitalism,

I wish you'd make up your mind.

The other day you were growling because our markets were TOO FREE.

Now time to buckle down and find out everything about it before knee jerking.

Are you kidding me? With the way nationalism has been whipped to a frenzy in the past few years? No time to actually consider facts. Just catch up with the name calling. Here a few suggestions. Islamonazis (not sure of the definition as it is applied broadly and to multiple groups), RINOs (can be applied to any action that is in direct opposition to nationalism), and 'real conservatives' (mostly hyped up nationalists that would understand a conservative thought if it bit them in the a$$). Throw these (and many other 'intelligent' responses into any conversation and you're a faithful patriotic Republican.

However I fully agree with your assessment. Uncover the facts before making a judgement. From what I understand about it, I don't see a problem with it. But then again, I didn't see a problem with the ports deal...

Like I always say the golden rule.... The man with the gold rules.

These oil rich states have incredible amounts of money. Not only from the oil, but they then invest a lot of that money, which grows into even more money. Add to that in Dubai there is no tax on income, capital gains or dividends.. and it means even if they start out with less money, through exponential growth they will pass a nation with high taxes.

Do you stay up all night and drink?

Actually I have been sober for almost 18 years. I am tired of you people telling me I can't criticize Bush for his misdeeds. Can't you ever admit that Bush does something wrong?

The only people that have a problem with nationalism are those that don't believe the United States is a sovereign nation.

I didn't say anything about you criticizing Bush.

I just wondered why you were up at 4 o'clock in the morning.

"Where did I say we should pull our troops out?"

Since you don't think that our Muslim allies are worthy of us trying to protect, then it's a logical next step.

"Also, if we were to pull our troops out now why would they be considered failures? That makes no sense whatsoever. They won their battles."

The American soldiers won all the battles in Vietnam, but I don't see anyone commending those men and celebrating our victory. This is because we lost. America doesn't like losers, and if we pull out of Iraq now and Iraq subsequently falls to Zarqawi, then that's how are military will be seen as losers...

"It's the Iraqi people that now have to prove they are worthy of the sacrifices we have made for them."

But didn't you just imply that Muslims aren't worth our sacrifice basically because they are Muslims. If that's the case, then following your logic, the sacrifice was in vain the day our guys first set foot in Iraq.

LOL, right. I recognize the sovereignty of this nation of states. You know there is a difference between patriotism and nationalism. Unfortunately most 'real conservatives' can't, or won't, see the difference. Rampant nationalism has been the shelter too often in the past for major mistakes, in this voluntary union of sovereign states and elsewhere.

It's not xenophobia to not be comfortable with people how follow an ideology like Islam. It's as if you are saying that it is "xenophobia" to not like members of the Nazi party because some of them may not be trying to kill us right now....

So, in your addled head, Muslim=Nazi.

I'm glad you're nowhere near exercising any kind of governmental power.

What this ACTUALLY means is those contracts will go elsewhere.

Doncasters will lose that business.

No they won't. Not unless whoever subs out for parts decides they should because he can get a better deal with another vendor.

I've read the Quran. You, rather obviously, haven't.

Wrong. I've read it.

You obviously don't know any Muslims. I do.

And, if I may say so, you're rather uppity for a noob.

If you want to have a discussion, let's have it without the snideness.

Otherwise, I'm done.
