A growing problem at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International airport is making it difficult for some air passengers to catch cabs.
Some cab drivers are refusing to take passengers because they are carrying alcohol, such as bottles of wine or cases of beer, which conflicts with their religious beliefs.
"He loaded our luggage into the trunk, he saw our box carrying duty free liquor from Jamaica and told us he would have to take another cab, says passenger Greg Kline.
Kline did not easily find another cab.
"We approached the next cab in line, he just closed the cab and took off without a passenger, as did the one next to him, he says.
Airport staff say Muslim drivers have refused to take passengers with alcohol 922 times in the past year.
Airport policy does allow drivers to refuse a fare, only if they return to the beginning of the cab line, which can mean a wait of 3 to 4 hours until their next fare.
Airport officials have been meeting with the Cab Driver Advisory Board to resolve the issue. They say they have investigated policies at other airports, but concluded that the problem is unique to MSP.
If they want to keep their job, of course they should. Sure the pharmacist can make their moral stand, but that doesn't mean that they should be let off the hook for not doing their job.
The Skinnies who drive cabs around the MSP area are usually awful. They're extremely rude and often take circuitous routes in order to gain a higher fare. I barely have an understanding of the roads around Minneapolis, but twice I've had to tell the cabbie not to screw me over and to go the fastest way.
To quote Lenny Kravitz: "Mr. Cabriver, f*ck you, I'm a survivor..."
Is there a story behind that quote?
I'm not so sure about that. At both Reagan National and Dulles they get their panties pretty far up their crack if you dare go out of turn or otherwise make any kind of a fuss against their 1-to-1 matching system. It's been a couple of years since I've taken a cab from there. It sure ain't like NY though where you simply grab a free one.
I usually go out the departures and catch one dropping people off to save myself some hassle and hashing it out with some moron guy that was given an ounce of authority.
FR is at Black Death =161 and holding.
Too bad you can't tell the difference between objecting to murder (morning after pill) and objecting to imbibing alcohol.
It's from a Lenny Kravitz song about racist cabdrivers, which can be found on his debut album from 1989.
Ooohhh.....I can think of some fun games to play with some strategically placed bacon grease.
Then just watch the fun.
Thanks. I didn't buy the album, but I do enjoy his music whenever I hear it on the radio etc.
I remember the good old days in NYC when most of the cabbies were actors, writers and musicians. I mean besides the "real" cab drivers who used to be all Irish, Italian and so forth who owned their cabs and really knew the city.
Anybody remember Checker cabs? Real big with jump seats. Easy to get into and out of.
If I lived i an area where cabs were used, I'd keep pork rinds with me.
In which case, they have no right to refuse any fare.
As you note, the pharmacist is, of course, subject to the policy of his particular employer.
The last checker was retired a few years ago, but you can still buy them used. The beauty of the cars was the ability to change out the motors and trans in under two hours with relatively little skill.
Driving was always an immigrant profession. Today, it's a lot of Middle Eastern, some Russian, a smattering of Pakisani, and a dash of African and D.R.
The problem is, the hack licenses are now approaching or over $300k. So, the only option open is to rent the cabs per shift, and it's almost impossible to make decent money.
Not even close, Weedhoppah.
The first scenario bans a substance and refuses service.
The second....(which you characterize so tastefully as "SHIT").... terminates an innocent human life!!
yep tell them to take the cross town hwy and step on it!!
There are some non-muslims that drive cab at the airport. Not many, though.
Hmmmm. " Excuse me driver, I need help getting this honey baked ham into the trunk.....Hey! He drove off with my luggage!"
Welcome to FR.
This is no shock. IIRC, Paul Sperry details how much of the operations at
our nation's airport are run by Muslims in his book "Infiltration".

Now most are probably honest and hard-working, but it does provide a great
avenue for importation/escape of terrorists and their hardware.
IIRC, I think that airport has "Caribou Coffee" shops, which is
a Muslim owned/operated company.
