A police officer was critically injured in a shooting at the Cleveland airport Thursday morning after he confronted a man at a ticket counter, officials said.
Several shots rang out as the two struggled, and both the officer and the man he had confronted were taken to hospitals, said Fred Szabo, director of Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. No one else was injured.
Szabo wasn't sure if the man was armed before the confrontation or if he had grabbed the officer's gun. The shooting, shortly after 10 a.m., was in an area before security check points. The airport remained open.
"We have several witnesses who saw it happen, a number of police officers, TSA employees and some passengers as well," Szabo said.
Employees at the United Airlines ticket counter were being interviewed by investigators after the shooting, United spokesman Robin Urbanski said

Man Who Shot Officer At Cleveland Airport Dies
Flights Not Affected By Shooting
CLEVELAND -- One person is dead and two people are hurt after a shooting at Cleveland Hopkins Airport Thursday morning.
The shooting happened at about 10:10 a.m. near the United Airlines desk, Cleveland television station WKYC reported.
Cleveland police safety director Martin Flask said that a man was trying to book a flight when an argument started.
Two officers went over to check out the disturbance. There was a struggle. The man grabbed officer Steven Walker's gun and shot the officer twice in the chest, officials said.
The suspect was also shot by a third police officer at the scene. Police said that the man was homeless, Cleveland television station WEWS reported. The man was taken to a hospital, where he later died.
The officer, who is a three-year veteran of the Hopkins airport police and was on the Cleveland police force for 18 years, was struck twice in the chest, WKYC reported.
Airport director Fred Szabo said that flights were not affected by the shooting. However, passengers will need to plan for take extra time getting to the terminal. The main ramp has been closed off to the departure area.
OK...I also heard that the guy was threatening all the people around him.
Thanks for the post. I thought a little earlier that FNC had said the officer passed away.
You're welcome. Very sad. Prayers for the officers involved and their families.
Thanks for the update.
Our prayers are with the officer and his family.
I'll bet that the "homeless" guy was making more money then the officer BTW.
You know for years there has been a device, the magna trigger, suitable for use on S&W revolvers that prevents starngers from using a police officer's weapon on him or her. Cost about $250-300. Were I a peace officer, I'd have it on my S&W revolver, presuming the bosses agreed. A nice 4 inch .357 is a proven stopper.
Prayers for his complete recovery.
Was the perp a rapper?
Possibly bad for the rest of the folks in line. Too much penetration.
thanks
Series, this is my favorite.
The latest news off Yahoo is that the perp had "an extensive criminal history, including three stints in prison for burglary and drugs"
Why am I not surprised?
that's close. i keep a p220 in 38super under my bed.
Just curious, why a 38 super vs. a 9mm? Most of my friends are avid 45 acp fanatics. I can't take the recoil, especially in plastic or alloy frames, hence my P226 stainless in 9mm.
