the words "Crack" and "pot" occur to me.

if magnetic levitation was that simple, we'd have been there already.

The word 'ignoramus' comes to me. We already are there, McFly

solution ...lower speed limits and alot less horsepower.

The fatality rate tok a large step down when the oh-so-correct 55 national limit disappeared.

The highway on which this accident occurred is four lane concrete, limited access, straight and flat.

Uncle Joe would have it all worked out. You just give the Executive plenary powers and he decrees the solution. Directing all the necessary resources to that solution will, of course, have no effect on the economy.

Among traffic fatalities, there are suicides and homicides and a very small number of fatal accidents. Irrational behavior, rather than the inability to control the auto, is at the heart of most fatalities. Many of these injuries would result from some other cause if automobiles were controlled by others. More bar fights, more jumpers, more overdoses.

Plus, I like to drive around the block once in a while just to get a better look at that babe at the bus stop.

Sure. I was referring to the condition of some of those packages when they finally reach their destination.

I got a piece of mail from the USPS which happened to be half of the outer page of a several page brochure. Surprisingly, the stamp made the trip, cancelled of course. They made sure they didn't lose that. The USPS enclosed it in a plastic bag which had an apology printed on it "in case the condition in which I received the mail caused any inconvenience".

Those futures did not materialize because they were not the futures of human beings as independent actors, but rather the futures of peons who somehow manage to produce as effectively as free men.

Okay, so how do farmers drive their tractors to the field? Or in the field? How about their grain trucks that need to get in there too, and possibly move around once there? Are you really going to lay a grid over every acre of farm land?

How about ATVs and motorcycles that can leave the roads behind? What are they powered by?

What exactly would offend you about a corporation building a transportation system for profit and to the vast benefit of the user? Would it impede on your right to drive like a lunatic, perhaps?

I didn't propose to ban gasoline for crying out loud.

If it weren't the collision of autos in vehicular travel, it would be the collision of atoms in molecular transporting because someone inevitably would be tailgating.

Oh please!

Some of us are truly INTO cars and trucks. Driving a great vehicle on a good stretch of road is an exhilarating experience.

I have real problems with someone who wants to take away someone else's pleasurable pastimes "for their own good/safety/whatever"

They'll get MY truck when they pry my cold dead fingers from the steering wheel....

The AP article was posted at 1:12 a.m. EDT and it states the accident occurred "Wednesday night." The accident appears to have been caused by the semi crossing the median, colliding with the passenger van. Given the time of the accident and its nature, I suspect it was probably caused by the semi's driver falling asleep at the wheel and losing control of his vehicle. The high number of fatalities most likely resulted from the fact that passenger vans, like the one here, are not particularly good at protecting their occupants in crashes.

I can't remember ever seeing an auto ad on TV which stressed fuel economy. It's always more horsepower.

So many folks, truck drivers included, drive as though a few minutes are more important than their life. Take away the needless acceleration ability of the vehicles and the driving safety would be greatly improved.

A corporation will do just that when it comes to pass that there actually is a reasonable prospect of profit in the venture. The fact that it is not being done is ipso facto evidence that it would require the consumption of greater resources than the present system, i.e. would be less efficient and more expensive (a tautology, I know).

Maybe that is why people here are getting pissed. Nobody said you couldn't drive you damn truck as fast as you want, you just can't do it on the EM tracks.

And I suggest flying planes if you want exhilaration. Driving a car just can't cut it in comparison.
