New poll shows Casey’s lead over Santorum narrowing
Allentown Morning Call ^ | 4/26/2006 | John L. Micek

HARRISBURG -- U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pa., has pulled to within single digits of Democratic state Treasurer Bob Casey Jr., while Gov. Ed Rendell continues to hold a narrow lead over rival Lynn Swann, a new Morning Call/Muhlenberg College poll has found. Casey, the son of the former governor and the man that nationwide Democrats hope will finally be able to dislodge Santorum from the U.S. Senate seat he's held since 1994, saw his double-digit lead diminished to just eight percentage points in the survey of 518 registered voters. In a hypothetical match-up held today, Casey leads Santorum 46 to 38 percent, down from the 49 percent to 37 percent advantage Casey commanded in early March. Seventeen percent of those surveyed said they didn't know enough about the U.S. Senate contest to make up their minds. Rendell, meanwhile, held a 45 percent to 39 percent lead over Swann, with 16 percent undecided with little more than six months remaining before Election Day. In March, Rendell was in a virtual dead heat with Swann, leading him 46 percent to 43 percent. The new Muhlenberg numbers hew closely to other statewide polls, which have shown the Democratic governor running neck-in-neck with the former Pittsburgh Steelers star. Muhlenberg pollsters sampled voter opinion between April 17 and Monday. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.3 percentage points. See the entire poll tomorrow on mcall.com.

Whoever wins this, it will probably not be by a huge margin. I don't miss PA weather, but I do miss some of the politics!

Pubbies typically do not poll very well. Polls like this would be more accurate if the people who told the pollster either "Santorum" or "Go F yourself!" were all counted as likely Santorum voters.

I'd like to see Swann's numbers improve. The fact that only 45% are FOR Rendell is good though.

I wonder if he got a bounce from Tony Soprano's endorsement last week? :)

I actually enjoyed the PA Senate debates during the last election. They included not only Arlen Sphincter and his Socialist opponent, but the Constitution Party and Libertarian Candidates as well. Great Comedy Central material.

I really hope Santorum defies all previous expectations and winds up winning this thing and of course i hope Swann wins as well. I would L O V E to see Chuck-E-Schumer's face if Santorum wins :)

Santorum closing on Casey. This is where Harris needed to be in FL at this point, and we know how that's going. I'm having warmer feelings on Santorum's chances by the day. Now if we can only get Harris & Burns to drop out...

"New poll shows Casey’s lead over Santorum narrowing"

This is classic ratspeak. In English this might have been
"Santorum closing in on Casey"

Victories for Santorum and Swann would help make election day a good one! ;-)

Or if they had any idea how to properly interpret poll results, they would have realized that there is no significant statistical difference between the 49-37 result and the 46-38 result. Both are within the margin of error of one another, and taken by themselves, no real conclusions can be drawn.

That said, I do believe the race really is tightening, because other polls corroborate this movement.

All the numbers are going to start tightening. The MSM was playing the early over sampling of Democrats game making the numbers look worse than they were for Republicans.

You spoke it well. Santorum bottomed out a few months ago. He made a few serious gaffes, but seems to be recovering from them. A Santorum would be something to toss into the teeth of liberals even if they make gains elsewhere.

If you go by Rasmussen, it shows Casey's lead widening, to 13 points!!
