He's definitely not too old, but there may be too much water under the bridge.

I want Newt to try to fill Cheney's shoes, if he can. The VP needs to be a "bulldog" about policy.
I doubt if he will be able to present himself as "electable" in 08. I see no one "electable", yet.
(I will not vote for a Washington insider as POTUS.)

In retrospect, maybe it's a good thing he didn't run in '96. As it turned out, Newt had his own "Lewinsky" problems.
