Actually, I don't like Newt. During the Clinton impeachment I couldn't understand why House Speaker Gingrich would not allow treason, filegate, travelgate, Juanita Broaddrick FBI interview and other evidence to be brought up in the Judiciary hearings. Conservatives certainly sent enough faxes, emails and letters requesting it.
At the same time, pornographer Larry Flynt publically said something to the effect that he knew of Representatives who were also having affairs with staffers and would reveal the names - if they didn't help Clinton as much as possible.
Newt Gingrich resigned. Later he was found to have been having an affair with a staffer.
The next House Speaker, Livingston, also refused to allow much evidence, concentrating on the Monica affair. Later he also resigned amid revelations of multiple affairs.
The next Speaker, Hastert, also refused to allow evidence but did not resign. The impeachment went forward with many charges unheard in the House and Senate.
Was Newt Gingrich under blackmail? That question has never been answered in my mind, and until it is, I ignore anything Newt says. Perhaps this has all been addressed somewhere but I have never seen it.
