A Spanish version of the Star-Spangled Banner

Video Posted 4/25/06

NEW YORK - Latino Pop Stars are recording a Spanish-language version of "The Star-Spangled Banner" to show their support for migrant workers in the U.S.

The Latino-oriented record label Urban Box Office says it plans to release the recording to coincide with the Senate's debate on immigration legislation next week.

UBO President Adam Kidron said the purpose is to show solidarity with undocumented immigrants and what he says is "their quest for basic civil rights."

The label says "Nuestro Himno," or "Our Anthem," is set to "rhythmic Latin musical arrangement" but respects the song's traditional structure.

It will be primarily in Spanish with a few words sung in English.

The song is on the album "Somos Americanos," which will be sold for $10.

UBO says a portion of the proceeds will go to the National Capital Immigration Coalition.

TOPICS: Culture/Society
KEYWORDS: nationalanthem; nuestrohimno; seenit
I can see it at ball games now: Yell 1 for English version, 2 for Spanish

So does it go anything like this:

Jose can you see, by the dawns's early light,
It is time to get up and hang out at Home Depot
When the Gringos come round, hop in back of their truck
Another three dollars an hour, I can't believe your luck
And the apple's red glare, the strawberries bursting in air,
Gave proof thro' the day that we are all still here.
Jose, does that Mexican Flag yet wave
O'er the land of the free loaders and the home of the Libs.

Too funny. How is this for a rhyme:

"Jose, does that Mexican Flag yet wave?
O'er the land of the free loaders, and the home of Presidente Jorge."

How about an English version of "La Cucaracha" to go with it.

OTOH, JPFO has translated the Bill of Rights into Spanish, among other languages. Their purpose was not to dis the BoR, but to spread the knowledge of what true freedom really is (or was).

Párrafo 2

Voluntarios entrenados adecuadamente (Milicia) son necesarios para el mantenimiento de la Libertad en cada Estado, y el derecho de la gente de tener armas no será infringido.

Great. It reminded me of another old favorite:

T'was the night before Christmas and all thru la casa, not a creature was stirring. Carramba! Que pasa? Santa was down at the corner saloon. Muy borracho since mid-afternoon.

I tried to tweak this to match the ABABCCACDD rhyme pattern:

Jose can you see, by the dawns's early light,
It is time to hang out, at the seven-eleven,
When the Gringos drive by, to their truck take your flight,
To your low-paying, menial job you'll be driven.

Though some people may glare,
You have nothing to fear,
To stay is your right,
Congress says "please stay here",

Jose will that Mexican Banner soon wave
O'er the land of the free, and the home of the brave.
