United 93: Sobs And Applause
FoxNews.com ^ | April 26, 2006 | Roger Friedman

"United 93" is a movie of firsts. It was made from the heart and not to make money, certainly. It’s a short movie but one that you never want to see end — not because the story is so appealing, but because you know what the end is, and you never want it to come.

That must have been how the audience sitting in the balcony of the Ziegfeld Theater felt last night at the film’s premiere. When the 93-minute movie ended — in silence, not an explosion — the people in the balcony sobbed in a way I have never heard before in a movie house. It was gut wrenching, and it was terrifying. I don’t know if "United 93" has given them closure or permission to keep reliving this horror.

Peter Greengrass has made an extraordinary document for them of what their relatives must have gone through in their final hour of life. “United 93” is beautifully crafted, thoughtful and precise. There is nothing wrong with it. In fact, it has the polish of perfection, hitting every note, dotting every “i,” crossing every “t.” You have to admire the stamina of everyone involved that they were able to pull off such a feat.

There are a few user comments to that effect, but nothing of that nature from IMDB itself.

Looking at it from that perspective, you may be right. I'm really not clear where Floyd Bennett falls in this regard. He had been in the Navy certainly, but as far as I know he wasn't in the reserves. Was Byrd's expedition officially sponsored by the Navy? I know Byrd wrangled a lot logistical support from them, much to the irritation of some Navy brass.

I do think these heroes deserve some recognition. The particular form it took would not matter to me.

Whether or not Congress had the authority to give a certain award, a resolution from them that the Flight 93 heroes ought to be honored in some fashion or other would carry great weight. So I still think they are remiss in this respect.

A rare time I will go to a movie theatre and only due to a recreation of a travesty that will never be forgotten and never be forgived. Never to forget, never to forgive.

Exactly - this is little enough we can do to honor the incredible bravery and sacrifice of these heroes.

It isn't about "our" sensitivities...it's about honoring people who gave the ultimate to protect the USA - They knew, after the 3rd plane hit the Pentagon, where they were likely headed...the Capitol...

They gave the ultimate - they were the first troops in the war.

The least we can do is see the movie - and buy the DVD for our children and grandchildren

That's a good viewpoint, but it defies historical facts. Just lay out, in sequence, the terrorist events since 1993, and the picture is clear as a bell. Clinton and the Democrat Party may as well have crashed those airplanes into the WTC, the Pentagon and the lonely field in Pennsylvania. As time and history go by, my position and the truth will become clearer and clearer. The Democrat Party as it exists today needs its heart ripped out in the voting booth. Failure of the American voter to make this happen will cause our country and citizens great national and personal pain. If you don't think it can happen, just become a serious student of history. Yes, we too, like many civilizations before us can be wiped off the face of the earth. And.....the Democrat Party is doing a great job to make certain it happens.

I had to turn Private Ryan off after the first 10 minutes. It was so extreme. I just couldn't bear it.

"Extreme" would have been if it were fiction.

This was real - and thanks to the American boots on European soil, you don't have to speak German -

Might be a good idea to watch and remember and give Thanks

This happened to me, and several other moviegoers, when I saw Passion of the Christ.

I went into the women's restroom aferwards to compose myself, and was followed by scores of other women who were still sobbing as well.

These people on the messageboard are crazy. The only thing I don't understand is why they are so desperate to deny reality. I'm sure there are some nutty Islamists among them, but I bet that the majority are home-grown American lefties. Why do they hate their own country so much?

Personally I love all the old WWII movies, including Dirty Dozen, Stalag, The Longest Day, The Great Escape. My dad used to watch them and I still watch them when they air on Veteran's Day or D-day. SPR was one of the hardest movies I have ever watched, but I still cry when Jim Brown gets killed running at the end of the Dirty Dozen, or John Wayne gets it at the end of Sands of Iwo Jima. Same here.

Hard to believe this could be a good movie since Roger (Meathead) Ebert praised it.

I am still pissed as hell and though I support GWB feel he has not done enough to punish these sc^mbags...

and just what do you propose he could do more ? - Especially since he is fighting the enemy at home at the same time that is trying to thwart his every move?

Maybe you should save your ire for the real enemies within the ranks of our elected officials and their mouthpieces, the MSM - and pubbies who don't realize what Herculean - hurdles he has had to jump - but give aid and comfort to the enemy within by jumping on him if he doesn't do every single thing they think he should.

We might do well, also, to keep in mind that we make our judgements only a tiny part of the information the Pres has

Well if I was a serious student of history, I'd say that Muslim conflicts with the Western world go back a long time before 1993.

I'll stand by my statemet that Republican and Democratic administrations in the past have given too little attention to this problem. (For example, when Reagan pulled out of Beirut, it sent a real signal of weakness that led to later attacks.)

Now, at least one party has awaken to the challenges, and for that I'm thankful.

Your post brought tears to my eyes.

God Bless Your Father, and all of our fathers, brothers, uncles, husbands, (and mothers and sisters and aunts) who served then, and now.

I wish I knew. It is sad, really.

Did you see the one about the planes being a "holographic image" done by some James-Bond type helicopter?

Sheesh.

"watch Black Hawk Down. It'll change you as well."

I snapped during Blawk Hawk Down in the way United States sends its troops into wars. If we go into a battle/war then it should be no holds barred. When we fight it should be total hell for our enemy. Air strike the living shit out of them. Use bombs, rockets, missiles, artillery, and whatever else we can use. When the objective is achieved get the hell out.

No nation building like Iraq. That is not our job. Draw 3 lines on a map separating the 3 different tribes and tell them this is your country to build and defend. The countries in the Middle East were simply lines drawn on a map by the British and Turks. They did not take into account the Middle East has always been tribal. Correct their mistade and then get out. For the problems with tribalism see Africa.

With this mouthy little pissant in Iran we bomb their military back into using spears and we and we bomb any ideas of a nuke right out of their heads.

Make it known that no matter where a terrorist comes from if they cause damage to our people or our property wherever it is we will find out where they trained. Then a major city is bombed in that country save England and a countries that have been actively engaged in the WOT. I need to think some more on this because a lot of it would have to case by case. The idea is to put real effing serious fear into terrorists and terrorist countries anywhere.

Yes, an a whole new attitude among citizens aboard planes. About a week ago some nutcase said something about a bomb on the plane and the passengers tackled him. Talking "bomb" on a plane is the Founding Fathers "yelling fire in a crowded theatre".

"the Founding Fathers "yelling fire in a crowded theatre"."

Oliver Wendell Holmes was a prominent Justice, but I wouldn't call him a Founding Father. He coined the term in Schenck v. United States, in 1919.
