You're wrong. In many places, there are laws that medical students who want to be OB GYNS have to learn abortion techniques. The only way to learn them is to participate in them.
Most of these laws have a conscience clause today, but because the legislation was politically oriented to begin with, they might not tomorrow.
Anyway, the message is clear. People who object to killing babies should not dare to think they deserve to have a career delivering babies.

Obstetrics and gynecology used to be about fixing problems with a women's reproductive system, and bringing healthy babies into the world. Now, people like you think that abortion is what qualifies one to be a good OB GYN.
No one needs to learn abortion techniques in order to be a good doctor. If you force people, they will simply go into another line of medicine, and then eventually there will be a shortage of doctors who deliver babies.
There are many Catholics who use birth control, have abortions, have artificial insemination performed on them. All of which are considered WRONG per Catholic doctrine. Just because Catholics DO something doesn't mean the church has to accept it and say its ok.
I bet they treated her for infertility until the point that she asked for AI. And what is this -- 'my family.' You and your girlfriend are NOT a family, sweets. Evidently doctors don't get freedom of conscience.
I never said that, but I guess its correct. What if there are complications and the baby is injured or dies in utero, or what if the health of the mother or baby is at risk? It is important that the OBGYN be prepared for these situations, so YES, it is important that they know how to do an abortion.

But the law is. Because the rare situations when an abortion is necessary to save a woman's life may not come up during the student's training, people like NY's Mayor Bloomberg think it's okay to decree that students put in time at abortion clinics, where all the abortions are elective (if they were medically necessary, they'd be happening in the hospital). Apparently it is not enough that they learn D & C or C-sections without taking part in elective abortions "just to learn how" to rip up a fetus really well and really quick.
Abortionists are not really held in high esteem. Even Howard Dean answered "No, I'm a medical doctor" when asked if he had ever performed an abortion when he worked at Planned Parenthood. That's very telling as to the level of medical skill required to perform one, isn't it?
That I know and understand. But the way you made it sound was that even the doctor was violating a belief (creating life artificially) that *ALL* Catholics believe. I highly doubt this doctor follows that same belief if he's a fertility specialist.

there are tons of "Cafeteria Catholics" who pick and choose what they want to believe from their faith. just because not all Catholics believe it, doesn't mean it is not a valid tenet of faith. Those who don't believe are really better served by choosing a faith that is more in line with their belief system. i would defend anyone who is refusing to perform a procedure based on a principle of religious faith, and as has been pointed out, the slippery slope in the other direction (forcing those with beliefs to compromise them, by force of law) is much more troublesome to me. one can find PLENTY of docs to perform whatever one wants done, no need to force anyone to go against their conscience, to get what one wants.

I've lived long enough to do plenty of wrong myself. That doesn't mean anyone should be able to force me to do do more of it.
