CA: Organizers gear up for rally - May 1 protest

Organizers gear up for rally
Employers urged not to punish workers who take part in May 1 protest

Readying for a massive national rally on May 1, organizers are calling on employers not to punish employees who skip work to protest, while state legislators are expected to vote this week on a resolution that would formally recognize a boycott.

For weeks, organizers have been calling for a massive mobilization on May 1, Labor Day in the United States or International Workers Day abroad, to show the force of the undocumented immigrant community across the U.S. - an estimated 5 percent of the U.S. work force.

Though organizers have been split about whether the protest should include a work, school and economic boycott - they have been carefully working to broaden their coalition over the past two weeks.

"This whole movement is snowballing not just in the size but also in the composition of the coalition. It's diversifying, it's not just Latinos," said Nativo Lopez, the president of the Mexican American Political Association. In the coming days, he expects Filipino, Muslim and African immigrant organizations to announce they will join the boycott.

In the Korean community, some employers have been bracing for the boycott, expecting many of their Latino workers to call in sick, said Danny Park, executive director of the Korean Immigrant Workers Alliance.

ome small businesses plan to close for the day.

Last week, the Korean Apparel Manufacturers Association sent out letters to its 1,000 members who employ an estimated 30,000 workers asking them not to retaliate against workers who don't show up for work that day.

"We don't want a confrontation between employers and employees," said Mike Lee, the association's president. "We want to stand together."

Angelica Salas, executive director of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights, said she expects most of those participating to be students and longtime Latino activists.

"Day laborers and low-wage workers can't give up their day of work. It's not that they don't support this, it's economic."

Me too! Good idea on using both mediums (phone and email.)
Hopefully more will send them a message.

Our whacko legislators need to hear from us often.

You know I just can't take much more of this. It actually makes me sick at my stomach lately. My emails and phone calls are getting more and more angry. I am expecting jack-booted thugs at my door any day now.

Does anyone else feel like this?

Yep Mexico told the organizers to cool it, but it's too late.

The really radical groups like ANSWER and WWW are ready and willing to jump in and these guys will not be distributing American Flags to wave.

Well a friend of mine used to work for Nicole Parra and she was in charge of opening the emails. She said she rarely read them and just hit delete, delete, delete. I asked if she at least tabulated them, she laughed and said nope. Wonder how many more out there do that?

Good old CA, God I hate this state now. I used to love living here back in the 50s and 60s but it is sh** now!

I moved here in the early '70s. It was still great then. You're absolutely right about what it is now.

Employers urged not to punish workers who take part in May 1 protest

Well, if an employer (company) fires illegals that walk off the
job on May 1, I hope we hear about it.
So my discretionary funds can be re-directed to those EEEVVVIIILLL capitalists.

It's a tough thing... gawd knows the leftists have mobied the system plenty of times, i.e. pretended to be conservative to make conservatives look bad. Emails etc. are totally unscientific. They're junk.

Amazing. I emailed McClintock once. He responded personally. All others have either gone unanswered or I got an 'auto-reply' with the standard message: "we are so busy, we are unable to reply to ya di ya di ya..."

Funny, they have time to legislate this kind of garbage but not to listen to the electorate.

Pssssst. Start the rumor the day before the rally that there will be INS and ICE crackdowns against the employers and illegal aliens there and watch the panic begin. It's worked so far in Wisconsin and Austin, TX. Rumors and intimidation can work wonders to let the air out of their protest sails.

Whereas they need to pass a strict border control,
Whereas they need to build a wall/fence
Whereas they need to deport ALL illegals
Whereas they need to dump the anchorbrat crap
Whereas they need to arrest those that boycott
Whereas pass HR4437
Whereas NO amnesty ever

Kay Bailey Hutchison is strong on border CONTROL and she has my vote. Thanks Kay!!Make it a strong Texas, stop illegal aliens in their tracks!! (just received a response from her regarding border CONTROL.)
