Illegal immigrants in this country are threatening a massive boycott on May 1, purportedly to demonstrate they are so essential that the U.S. economy would shut down without their labor. On the contrary, such a boycott will expose the lie expressed by President George W. Bush in Cancun, Mexico, that they are "doing work that Americans will not do."
According to the Pew Hispanic Center, illegal immigrants make up less than 5 percent of the U.S. labor force. If every one of the 20 million illegal aliens in our country plays hooky from his job on May 1, the overwhelming majority of those same types of jobs will be worked by millions of U.S. citizens.
All over America, U.S. citizens will flip hamburgers in fast-food shops, wash dishes in restaurants, change sheets in hotels, mow lawns, trim shrubs, pick produce, drive taxis, replace roofs on houses, and do all kinds of construction work. Americans are quite willing to work unpleasant, menial, tiresome and risky jobs, but not for Third World wages.
An employment service in Mobile, Ala., recently received an "urgent request" to fill 270 job openings from contractors who were hired to rebuild and clear areas of Alabama devastated by Hurricane Katrina. The agency immediately sent 70 laborers and construction workers to three job sites.
After two weeks on the job, the men were fired by employers who told them "the Mexicans had arrived" and were willing to work for lower wages. The U.S. citizens had been promised $10 an hour, but the employers preferred Mexicans who would work for less. Employment agency manager Linda Swope told The Washington Times: "When they told the guys they would not be needed, they actually cried ... and we cried with them. This is a shame."
Swope said that employment agencies throughout Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi all face similar problems because an estimated 30,000 men from Mexico and Central and South America, many in crowded buses and trucks, came into those three states after Hurricane Katrina, willing to work for less than whatever was paid to U.S. citizens.
Meanwhile, President Bush signed the Katrina Emergency Assistance Act extending for 13 weeks the unemployment benefits to U.S. citizens displaced by Katrina. Thus employers get the benefit of cheap foreign labor while you and I provide taxpayer handouts to workers whom the government allowed to be displaced from the jobs they were eager to take.
There is no penalty on employers who replace U.S. citizens with illegal immigrants at lower pay. Homeland Security even announced it has suspended the sanctioning of employers who hire illegal immigrants, and President Bush suspended the Davis-Bacon Act, which requires local contractors to pay "prevailing" wages.
A study published by the National Bureau of Economic Research reported that the surge of immigration in the 1980s and 1990s lowered the wages of our own high school dropouts by 8.2 percent. The surge has accelerated since that report was issued. The Congressional Budget Office reported that 60 percent of Mexican and Central American workers in the United States in 2004 lacked a high school diploma.
The Kennedy-McCain-Bush guest worker plan would import more uneducated, unskilled workers, and thereby deny our own high school dropouts (of whom we have too many) the opportunity to get started in building their lives in the labor force. U.S. citizens are threatened that the cost of lettuce will rise precipitously if we don't continue to import Mexican agricultural workers. But a farm worker gets only 6 or 7 cents out of a $1 head of lettuce, so even if the pay doubles, consumers would hardly notice the difference.
On the other hand, the costs taxpayers are forced to pay for social benefits for low-paid workers are astronomical. The National Research Council reports that an immigrant to the United States without a high-school diploma consumes $89,000 more in government services than he pays in taxes during his lifetime.
Low-paid illegal immigrants obviously pay very little taxes, but they cash in on all sorts of benefits paid by other taxpayers, such as schooling for their children, emergency health care, housing subsidies, Earned Income Tax Credit and law enforcement. If the 20 million illegal immigrants are legalized, they will also become eligible for Medicaid, and that's a real break-the-bank prospect.
These figures don't even count the rapidly growing underground economy, in which millions of illegal immigrants are paid off the books in cash. That enables both employer and employee to avoid paying taxes, and enables employers to avoid paying workers' compensation, unemployment compensation, and assorted other taxes.
If the Internal Revenue Service collected all the taxes that should be paid by the underground economy, our current budget deficit would disappear overnight, according to a Bear Stearns study released in 2005. The Americans who pay taxes are giving a free ride to those who are not paying taxes, and a 7-cent increase in the price of lettuce should not be on our worry list.
Should I tell you where the United Farmworkers stand?
If you are actually from Ben Ficklin, I'm surprised the residents of Tom Green oubnty don't tar and feather you and ride you out of town on a rail.
I suspect, though, you're from elsewhere - like Matamoros - and wouldn't go near Ben Ficklin for that very reason.
But WTH, let's just throw open the borders. Then we won't have to worry about enforcing our laws..(sarcasm)
It's pretty predictable where they stand given that they're so impacted with illegal workers and wish to continue defrauding them, too.
Oh, and it is you who's "poorly informed" since I didn't bring up the AFL/CIOs position at all but that of their president opposing the bill.
That's far more accurate than the "guest worker" nonsense.
I holed up in a room on the second floor of the Club Ocho.
"That's why I'm for a temporary worker program that will -- (applause) -- that says to a person, here is a tamper-proof card that says, you can come and do a job an American won't do, fill a need."
I'm with you. I am so tired of hearing this crap about "jobs Americans will not do". As soon as the illegals get amnesty does anyone doubt that they will also demand higher wages? That will be great - another giant underclass that the middle class will subsidize. Why not just pay Americans a decent wage and get rid of the illegals?
Didn't think you sounded like a Texan with THAT accent (and thinking).
Sounds like a fine idea - and you're right. Guys like Ben Ficklin will be leading the charge for them then, too.
He seems to be one of the gang leaders in the Latino Coalition.
They Will Deport Themselves February 16th, 2002 | Sabertooth

Every time an illegal alien sets foot in America he or she is a knowing burglar, breaking and entering across our borders, violating our laws. They are also squatters, attempting to colonize our land and our nation. Every moment of their presence in our country is an ongoing criminal act.
It is also illegal for a them to work here, so every cent these alien invaders take is done so illegally as is ever dollar of unearned subsides they're able to defraud from American taxpayers.
Thus, all of the proceeds of the illegals' inhabitation of the United States are the ill-gotten gains of an ongoing criminal enterprise.
As such, they ought to be treated like the proceeds of any other criminal enterprise, from fraud to theft to drug dealing to racketeering
The assets of illegal aliens should be subject to total forfeiture.
They are criminals, there is no moral reason why not. Therefore, a solution to much of our nation's problems with these international burglars resolves into focus
Amnesty for illegal aliens was tried in 1986, with a bipartisan bill that was signed into law by President Reagan. 2.7 million illegals were able to get green cards in a one-time only program. That amnesty would only happen once was an integral part of the bargain the federal government struck with the American people, who have always opposed illegal immigration by large margins. The other part of the bargain was a promise of effective law enforcement against future illegals.
The craven betrayal of this promise to the American people is bipartisan. Presidents Reagan, Bush the Elder, and Clinton all ignored the problem of illegals, as did both parties in Congress with the lone exception of the Republicans in 1996. Key to this failure has been the unwillingness of the federal government to deport illegals, as the law provides, in large numbers from the interior of our country.
Without deportation, there will be no solution to illegal immigration.
Now that the cancer of illegals has metastasized to 12 million and growing, many of these same politicians suggest that the solution to their malfeasance of duty is some new form of amnesty "Nevermind the earlier deal with the American people, the problem is now too big for our laws to solve, we must Surrender."
Their condescending gall is like that of death row lawyers who run out of appeals, and then suggest that execution after 15 years is cruel and unusual punishment. Any unpleasantness resulting from the delay is entirely the onus of our elected officials to bear. The American people never wanted their laws not to be enforced.
Even the current White House of President George W. Bush is sending such signals with their periodic trial balloons about "normalizing undocumented workers" and "making their work legal."
This is as much as saying
"Because we broke our promise to enforce the law against illegal aliens, we have no choice to break our promise that amnesty would happen only once."
Bunk.
We are told incessantly by these same spineless, duplicitous politicians from both parties how the problem of illegal immigration is intractable Much as many of those same cowards once described the problem of terrorism. Winning changes things, doesn't it?
It's time to fight and win the battle against the illegal invaders, all 12 million-plus of them. We don't need to round them all up; we simply enact the appropriate and fully Constitutional legislation, and serve the aliens notice:
"Be gone in 90 days. If you aren't, all of the proceeds of your criminal presence in the United States will be subject to total asset forfeiture."
This will be the disincentive to their ongoing invasion.
Some will leave, and some won't. After 90 days, we round up a few hundred thousand of them. That should be enough time to hire the manpower to process the invaders. Then we take all they own within our borders, recycle it into INS coffers, and send them swiftly back to their own countries, whether China, Mexico, Ireland, or wherever, with no profit for their illegal efforts.
The other 12 million illegals will take heed. Step aside, and watch the stampede.
It will only get easier
if only we start.
When are you going to start?
You're incorrigible.
"Incorrigible"??? Naw, he's no doubt paid by the Latino Coalition to try to derail rational things such as this ... and he's afraid of going back to Tom Green county Texas for fear of tar and feathers.
Agreed.
That post of Sabertooth's is from 2002. We all believed that number was too low back then, but Saber used it because it was the number that was being used by the MSM at the time.
Notice that the MSM is still using the same number 4 years later.
The key is that if we started taking the actions Saber lists in his post, the majority would 'Deport Themselves!'
Newt finally agrees and more Conservatives will be getting the message the more he, Tom Tancredo and other Conservatives start getting the idea out there.
No Jobs.
No Welfare.
No Health Care.
No Food Stamps.
No FREE Education.
Zero tolerance of illegal aliens.
Make it clear that their free ride is over and they'll go home the same way they left home.
Adios criminales!
There's sure nothing there I disagre with - and the sooner the better. I might only add "English language fluency by test".
Marches of criminals wishing to be granted citizenship and other no cost (to them) freebies notwithstanding ... perhaps we should let all the other criminals out of jail to join them???
I'm sure you've noticed how the far righters will exaggerate the numbers of illegals to try make it seem worse. They then try to minimize the number of illegals when they are trying to convince themselves how easy it would be to deport.
Doesn't matter how many of you there are Ben-Ben. You're illegal and should be pitched out on your criminal rear ends. No matter what it might cost, the costs of keeping you here are much greater because they go on year after year.
Your silly march coming up next week should help rouse most normal citizens to take notice and do something about it. It will allow them to see the dangers posed by having militant illegal aliens who don't wish to be Americans at all, but merely to cash in on goodies for themselves while remaining outside our laws.
It doesn't appear that anyone can say exactly if or when reform will be put in place, but it has most definatly been decided that no-one will be pitched out.
No kidding??? Who decided that ... the Latino Coalition??? I hadn't read of any such bill passing in Congress - had you?
