Blair says West must send 'strong signal' to Iran over nuclear build-up

LONDON (AFX) - The West must send a 'strong signal' to Iran's leadership that it will not tolerate defiance over calls to suspend its nuclear programme, said Prime Minister Tony Blair.

Speaking as oil prices soar over fears of a military confrontation with Iran, Blair said now was not the time to show 'weakness'.

However, Blair repeated his assertion last week that 'Iran is not Iraq', and added that 'nobody is talking about military invasion'.

'People do however, want to send a very strong signal to Iran because...Iran is supporting terrorism in the region to the detriment of democratic governments, it's in breach of its nuclear obligations and people want it to comply,' he told his monthly press conference.

'So the real issue for me on Iran is: what are you going to do about it? (and) all I'm saying is that it's not very sensible at the moment in time to send a signal of weakness.'

The US and Iran have been trading increasingly bellicose statements in recent days, leading to suggestions that Washington is planning a military strike against Iranian nuclear installations.

However, Blair said the US administration was 'very, very well aware' of the implications of such a move.

PM Blair recently said that Britain won't be sending troops to the military effort in Iran--not because he doesn't want to, but because Britain can't spare them for now. ...too many working in other countries during this War on Terror. Also, Britain is stepping up recruiting efforts to increase its military capabilities.

Really, Tony? What kind of a "strong message" are you going to send when you have already dismissed military action.

In the words of Robin Williams, describing unarmed British cops: "STOP! Or I'll say 'Stop!' again!"

Apparently, he's slept through all the previous discussions on this topic. Must have Prince Harry's predicament on his mind.

Blair: ..."all I'm saying is that it's not very sensible at the moment in time to send a signal of weakness.'

May God bless you, Mr. Blair.

Now if you could just talk some sense into the American liberal, we'd really appreciate it.

Actually, he seems to have said no to an invasion. That does not rule out airstrikes, special operations and much else.

How about this one:

It's as likely to work as anything the U.N. or the E.U. will send.

I'm a little suprised a the hard play of the Brit's on this thread. Really there is only so much they can do. Really there is only so much WE can do. Unless we do a full Pusche' from Iraq to Iran we can't take and hold it and it is really not on the table. We will bomb them and deal with the mullahs later. MHO.

Yes. That's why I wrote the background information in the first comment. Britain has a bit of negative history from the Mandate period. But even so, Britain has been very courageous and generous in the current War on Terror.

Seems strange to me that Blair says the west must not show weakness and then indicates that military action are not an option. Iran has thumbed it's nose at the world community. END OF STORY...BOMB NOW!!!! How many more years are we going to play this idiotic negotiation game? North Korea played this game and won and now Iran will follow. Who's next? At some point the world has to wake up and respond with action when these two bit tyrants give us the finger.
