You can be a nation of law and a compassionate nation at the same time," he said.

No you can't.

Deportation might not work, but making them WANT to leave sure can!

Make it a felony to be here, tax money orders sent to Mexico.

They'll take themselves home, just like they got here: one at a time.

That kind of talk only bolsters the will of the illegals and will certainly result in an increase in their numbers. Bush and the other crap weasel politicians ought to just shut up and start seeing to it that the laws are enforced. At least make more of a show against illegal immigration so they stop coming.

Do they treat us and our laws with respect? Help them deport themselves, George. Secure the border and make the jobs and benefits for illegals dry up. This is not rocket science; you and many other pols just don't want to do it, to the disappointment of many.

President Bush in Irvine today called for a rational, temporary guest worker program and said that attempting to deport as many as 12 million undocumented workers illegally in the United States was a policy that was not going to work.

At first he said the guest worker program would last 3 to 6 years then they'd have to go home. So now the real agenda comes out finally, it was amnesty all along. Maybe I'm mistaken but I can't see the House signing onto some massive legalization scheme when four years ago they wouldn't even let a much smaller 245(i) amnesty through. It still has basically the same members as then and their opinions haven't changed much.

"...rational, temporary guest worker program..."

We don't need that crap. Just enforce the fricking laws now on the books, Mr Bush! What don't you GOPers understand about *criminal, illegal aliens*?

Sometimes compassion is totally misplaced. I only wish W would have half as much compassion for the 4 million individuals in line who are waiting to immigrate here legally. These indiviudals have to wait anywhere from 8 to 23 years to get here.

BTW, the Department of Home Security does not have the personal to handle the 4 million trying to immigrate legally, and so how in the heck are they going to handle another 12 to 20 million?

As I posted on the other ongoing thread, from a perception-public relations standpoint, mass deportations would be a disaster. Can you imagine the nightly reports on ABCBSNBC showing an "exodus" of sad-faced deportees? By the time the sob-sisters were through with it, we'd have a screeching clamor from the sheeple to invite them all back, with all of their relatives tagging along for the ride.

Better, as some have noted on this thread, to take away the economic incentives for illegals to live and work here.

We need a better-maintained border by all means, but axing the essentially free ride for illegal immigrants would be a solid and effective first step.

We cannot lose sight of that we are talking about human beings that need to be treated with respect

I always treat burglars who have broken into my house with respect.

Then, they get shot.

We already have a temporary guest worker program. It is called the H1B Visa. NO GUEST WORKER program can work if it can't be enforced. To enforce any such program you have to apply current laws strictly and you MUST SECURE THE BORDER WITH A FENCE OR WALL. Any talk of a guest worker program without total border security is just talk of another amnesty and an attempt to fool the people into accepting one.

...Massive Deportation Is Not Realistic...

So, offer them a choice of either entering the way they came in or being buried in a large trench.

Of course you don't do it all at one time.

Strawman. I'm beginning to expect this out of the president.

You set up excutive policies and do it in about 5 years, or less.

Not if they break the law. Lets see here. Somebody poorer than myself breaks into my home, eats my food, and starts sleeping on my kitchen floor. Then he demands that I buy his food, clothes and gas for his car. He also informs me that his wife and 3 kids are sleeping in my attic. Respect? Yeah.
