Kantipur Report

KATHMANDU, April 24 - The embassy of the United States in Kathmandu on Monday has ordered mission family members, US employees and citizens to leave the country due to the deteriorating situation and ongoing security concerns after 18 days of pro-democracy movement and general strikes. "Under ordered departure, mission family members and non-emergency American employees would depart Nepal as soon as possible. American citizens should also depart Nepal as soon as possible," the embassy said in a statement.
At least 14 people have been killed and hundreds other injured across the country during clashes between the pro-democracy protesters and the security forces since the strike began on April 6.
"American citizens also are advised that the Government of Nepal continues to use curfews and other sometimes violent measures to control the growing number of large and widespread demonstration," the embassy said.
The Department of State is concerned by threats to personal safety from "political instability, civil disorder, demonstrations" and lack of supplies and essentials entering the country, according to the statement.
It also said that protesters have attacked numerous vehicles, including diplomatic ones during demonstrations.
Arrests of doctors and numerous injured demonstrators have severely limited the medical facilities available in Kathmandu, the embassy said.
Stating that the government is likely to continue to use curfews to thwart demonstrations, the embassy has asked its citizens to exercise special caution and avoid areas of demonstrations.
"Security forces have 'shoot-to-kill' orders for curfew violators and have used tear gas and rubber bullets against demonstrators," the statement said.

Who would you have to tick off in the U.S. State Department to be assigned to this embassy in the first place?
"Nobody except the police/army and aristocratic families in Kathmandu own arms."
I take some comfort in being able to look around, this den my computer is in, and see the many reasons we, as Americans, are free.
I think I shall clean and oil them today.

Nepal ping.
After oiling, I believe I will go out today after work and burn off about 500 rounds for liberty!
Not a word in this article about the Maoists...though there are other reports of it (including the link you provide here on FR) and I believe the US gvernment, in its official reports should indicate that there is also a Maoist element trying to take advantage of any pro-democracy movement.
I guess the Vajrah Hotel will have to close down.
Ah ... gun control ... an excellent use of spare time.

I find it stunning that the worlds premier news organizations are not really covering this story .
Thank goodness for the Internet!
"American citizens also are advised that the Government of Nepal continues to use curfews and other sometimes violent measures to control the growing number of large and widespread demonstration," the embassy said.
At least we know what side the news media is on.
King's reinstating Parliament, latest on this.
