KANDAHAR (Afghanistan) - a military aircraft left the runway of the airport of Lashkargha, in the south of Afghanistan, making several casualties and perhaps deaths, indicated Monday the local authorities.

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, April 24 (Reuters) - An unidentified aircraft crashed in Afghanistan's southern province of Helmand on Monday, causing some casualties, a provincial official said.
The plane crashed into a residential area close to an airfield used by U.S.-led troops in Lashkar Gah, the provincial capital of Helmand, according to Mahaiuddin, administrative chief for the province. The cause of the crash was unclear.
British Defence Secretary John Reid was due on Monday to visit British troops stationed in Helmand, which has borne the brunt of growing insurgency by Taliban fighters.

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan - A civilian-leased plane crashed Monday after overrunning an airstrip on landing in southern Afghanistan and some casualties were reported, a provincial official said.
The plane crashed in Lashkar Gah, the main town in Helmand province, about 325 miles southwest of the Afghan capital, Kabul, said deputy provincial Gov. Amir Mohammed Aghunzaba.
The official said there were an unspecified number of people inside the "small white plane" who were dead or seriously injured.
Coalition military forces sent emergency crews to the scene, said Canadian military spokesman Maj. Quentin Innis.

The airport has in the past been criticised for the poor quality of its runway and for the fact that residential houses may have been built too close to the runway.

Governor of Helmand province Mulla Muhammad Amir told Afghan Islamic Press that the plane crashed in residential area by overrunning an airstrip on landing and there were casualties in the plane.
He said that it was military plane and damaged.
Eyewitnesses told Afghan Islamic Press that a big and white plane crashed near Helmand airport and ploughed into tents of Kuchis (Nomads) near the airport.
It is to be mentioned here that there were reports that UK Defence secretary will vitist Helmand province today.

The spokesman of the governor, Muhaidin Khan, indicated that the helps were leaving the "casualties and perhaps died" of the debris
The plane is of manufacture Russian according to Afghan authorities' but it was not possible in the immediate future to determine the identity of its owner.

He said the cause of the crash was unclear.
The number of casualties was uncertain, but at least five wounded civilians were pulled from the rubble of their mud homes, Enayatullah Ghafari, a hospital doctor said.
Foreign troops cordoned off the crash site as ambulances took the injured out, Ghafari said.
Defence Secretary John Reid was due on Monday to visit troops stationed in Helmand, which has borne the brunt of growing insurgency by Taliban fighters.
An official who declined to be named said the cargo plane appeared to have been used by counter-narcotic forces employed by the U.S. government.
A U.S. embassy official said he was investigating.
Helmand is the main drug producing region of Afghanistan.
